The words“risk”and “hazard”are often used
interchangeably.However,ifyouareresponsibleformanagingthehealth
andsafetyinyourworkplace,youmustunderstandthedifferencebetween
them.Therestofthislessonfocusesonhazards,includingwheretheymight
befoundindifferentworkplaces.
Hazardidentificationisakeystepinthedevelopmentofanyhealthand
safetyprogram.Itispartoftheprocessusedtoevaluateifanyparticular
situation,item,thing,etc.mayhavethepotentialtocauseharm.Theterm
oftenusedtodescribethefullprocessisriskassessment:Identify
hazardsandriskfactorsthathavethepotentialtocauseharm(hazard
identification).Itsgoalistofindandrecordpossiblehazardsthatmaybe
presentinyourworkplace.Itmayhelptoworkasateamandincludeboth
peoplefamiliarwiththeworkarea,aswellaspeoplewhoarenot–thisway
youhaveboththeexperienceandfresheyetoconducttheinspection.
Tocontrolworkplacehazardsandeliminateorreducetherisk,you
shouldidentifythehazardbycarryingoutaworkplaceriskassessment;
determinehowemployeesmightbeatrisk;evaluatetherisks;recordand
reviewhazardsatleastannuallyorearlierifsomethingchanges.
Everyworkplacehashazardsandalthoughtherewillbeanominated
personforconductingaformalriskassessment,itisstilleveryone’s
responsibilitytobemindfulofhazardsintheworkplaceandminimizetherisk
ofharm.Notallhazardsareobviousandtheywillbeuniquetoyour

safetyrisksandhavethepotentialtoharm.Somehazardsaremorelikelyto
bepresentinsomeworkplacesthanothers,anddependingontheworkthat
youdo.Therewillbehazardsthataremoreorlessrelevanttoyourbusiness.

harmanemployeewithoutnecessarilytouchingthem,including
heights,noise,radiation,magneticfields,temperatureextremes,

whichincludeinsects,molds,fungi,viruses,andbacterial
contaminationfromdefectsinsanitation.

frominhalingchemicalagentsintheformofvapors,gases,dust,
fumes,mists,orbyskincontactwiththesematerials.These
hazardscanresultinbothhealthandphysicalimpacts,suchasskin
irritation,respiratorysystemirritation,blindness,corrosionand
explosions.

4.Ergonomic.Ergonomichazardsarearesultofphysicalfactorsthat
canresultinmusculoskeletalinjuries.Forexample,repetitive
movements,apoorworkstationsetupinanoffice,poorposture

largescaleevacuationofadistrictbecauseofaflood,bombardmentor
approachingweathersystem.Inasituationinvolvinghazardousmaterials
orpossiblecontamination,evacueesmaybedecontaminatedbefore

2.Isolationreferstovariousmeasurestakentopreventcontagious
diseasesfrombeingspreadfromapatienttootherpatients,healthcare
