This glossary provides simple definitions for common technology words and terms to help
you feel more confident when using computers, smartphones, or the internet.
Term Definition
Technology Any tool or method that helps people solve
a problem or make life easier. It includes
everything from smartphones to household
appliances.
Digital Something that uses electronic signals or
data instead of paper or physical materials.
Examples include digital photos and online
calendars.
Internet A worldwide network that connects
computers and devices so they can share
information and communicate.
Wi-Fi The wireless signal that connects your
device to the internet without using a cord.
Website A digital page or space on the internet that
provides information, services, or
entertainment. Examples:
www.google.com, www.weather.com.
Link (URL) A clickable address that takes you to a
website. It usually starts with ‘www.’ or
‘https://’.
App (Application) A program that lets you do a specific task,
such as sending email, watching videos, or
shopping online.
Browser The tool that opens and displays websites.
Examples include Google Chrome, Safari,
Firefox, and Microsoft Edge.
Cloud An online storage area where you can
safely keep photos, documents, and files
that can be accessed from any device.

Data Information stored or shared by your
device, such as photos, emails, messages, or
documents.
Download Copying a file or program from the internet
to your device so you can use it offline.
Upload Sending a file or photo from your device to
the internet or an online account.
Search Engine A tool that helps you find information
online by typing in words or questions.
Examples include Google, Bing, and Yahoo.
Web Address The location of a website on the internet,
often starting with ‘http’ or ‘https’. The ‘s’
means it’s secure.
Password A secret word or phrase that protects your
accounts and personal information.
Cookie A small file that websites save on your
device to remember your preferences and
logins.
Pop-Up A small window that appears on your
screen, sometimes useful but often used for
ads or alerts.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Technology that allows computers to think,
learn, and make decisions similar to
humans. Examples include voice assistants
and smart recommendations.
ChatGPT A type of AI that can communicate in
natural language, answer questions, and
help with writing, planning, and learning.
Cybersecurity The practice of protecting computers,
networks, and data from unauthorized
access or attacks.
Phishing A scam where someone pretends to be a
trusted source (like a bank) to trick you
into sharing personal information.

Firewall A security system that protects your
computer from harmful online traffic or
hackers.
Encryption The process of converting information into
a code so only authorized users can read it.
Software Update A new version of a program that fixes
problems or adds security improvements.
Spam Unwanted or junk emails, often
advertisements or scams.
Virus A harmful program that can damage or
steal information from your computer or
phone.
Backup A saved copy of important files that you can
restore if your device is lost or damaged.
Privacy Settings Controls that allow you to decide what
information is shared and who can see it
online.
