MOVEMENT

FLEXION ANDEXTENSION
Flexion –decreasing theangle
of thejoint
Example: bending the kneeor
elbow
Extension –Increasingthe
angle of thejoint
Example: straighteningthe
knee orelbow

Flexion, Extension &Hyperextension
•Flexion decreases the
angle of a joint
–bending elbow orwrist
•Extension straightensa
joint and returns a
body part to the
anatomicalposition
•Hyperextension is
extension of a joint
beyond 180degrees

LATERALFLEXION
Thelateralmovementsofthetorsoandheadinthe
frontalplane.
Lateral neckflexion Lateral trunkflexion
6

Lateral flexion is the bending of the neck orbody
toward the right or leftside.

ABDUCTION ANDADDUCTION
Abduction–anymovement
ofabodypartawayfrom
themidlineofthebody
Example:Liftingarmsoutto
theside
Adduction –any movement ofa
body part towards the
midline of thebody
Example:Bringing armsback
towards thebody

Abduction &Adduction
•Abduction is movement of a part away fromthe
midsagittal line --raising the arm to theside
•Adduction is movement towards the midsagittalline

Circumduction
•Sequence of flexion, abduction,
extension & adduction
movements
Movement at the end of the bone in
a circularmotion
Generally will occur at theends of the
arms or legs(limbs)
Example: Drawing a circle in the air
with your fist(straight arm)

ELEVATION ANDDEPRESSION
Elevation –movement of the
shoulders towards thehead
Example: shruggingshoulders
Depression –movement ofthe
shoulders away from the
head
Example: returning the
shoulders to normalposition
(aftershrugging)

Elevation andDepression
•Elevation is a movement that raises a bonevertically
•Depression is lowering the mandible or theshoulders

ROTATION
Anymovementofabodypart
aroundacentralaxis
Thiscanoccurattheshoulder
orhip(ball/socketjoints)or
theneck
Example: Turning thehead
from side toside.

Lateral and MedialRotation
•Movement of a bone turning on its longitudinalaxis
–rotation of trunk, thigh, head orarm
•Medial rotation turns the boneinwards
•Lateral rotation turns the boneoutwards

Supination &Pronation
•Occurs in the forearm andfoot
•Supination
–rotation of forearm so that thepalm
facesforward
–inversion and adduction of foot
(raising the medial edge of thefoot)
•Pronation
–rotation of forearm so the palm faces
to the rear
–eversion and abduction of foot
(raising the lateral edge of thefoot)

PRONATION ANDSUPINATION
Pronation –rotation of thehand
so the thumb moves toward
the body’smidline
Example –palms facingdown
Supination –rotation of the
hand so the thumbmoves
away from the body’s
midline
Example –palms facingup

INVERSION ANDEVERSION
Inversion -movement of the
sole of the foot towardthe
body’smidline
Example: twisting the anklein
Eversion –movement of the
sole of the foot awayfrom
the body’smidline
Example: twisting the ankleout

Inversion &Eversion
•Inversion is a movement in which the soles are
turned medially
•Eversion is a turning of the soles to facelaterally

Dorsiflexion & PlantarFlexion
•Dorsiflexion is raising of the toes as when you
swing the foot forward to take a step (heelstrike)
•Plantarflexion is extension of the foot so that the
toes point downward as in standing ontiptoe

Opposition
•Oppositionismovement
ofthethumbtoapproach
ortouchthefingertips
•Importanthandfunction
thatenablesthehandto
graspobjects

Protraction &Retraction
•Protraction is movement of a bone anteriorly
(forward) on a horizontalplane
–thrusting the jaw forward, shoulders or pelvisforward
•Retraction is movement of a boneposteriorly
