1. Why is the Latin language used in giving scientific names?
The primary reason being, that Latin is a dead language which therefore, cannot change. Leading to
consistent naming. Another factor to be considered is Latin being the supposed “language of the
scholars” for a long time.
2. What is the importance of a biological classification system?

It aims to help identify organisms on a specific level. With a classification system, organisms would be
classified into their own,
not getting mixed up for confused with other organisms.

3. How does taxonomy differ from systematics?

Taxonomy focuses more on identifying and classifying organisms. While, systematics covers a broader
range with its primary focus being studying the evolutionary relationships among organisms, along
with their classifications and etc.

2 Kingdom Scheme
Scientist: Carolus Linnaeus
Included the following: Animalia and
Plantae
3 Kingdom Scheme
4 Kingdom Scheme
5 Kingdom Scheme
6 Kingdom Scheme
Classified the two kingdoms based on the
differences between animals’ and plants’
morphological characteristics, reproductive
system, mode of nutrition, physiology and
among others.
Scientist: Ernst Haeckel
Included the following: Animalia,
Plantae, and Protista

The most significant factor was the
observation of various microorganisms (due
to advancements in microscopy) which did
not fit with the 2 Kingdom scheme. Leading
to the formulation of Protista
Scientist: Robert Whittaker
Included the following: Animalia,
Plantae, Protista, and Fungi
Whittaker recognized the mode of nutrition of
fungi being vastly different to the other
kingdoms, therefore adding the kingdom along
with other factors such as structure,
reproduction and etc.
Scientist: Robert Whittaker
Included the following: Animalia,
Plantae. Protista, Fungi, and Monera
Whittaker observed the vast difference of
Monera organisms in terms of their cellular
structure and ecological diversity, but even more
so their genetic and biochemical differences in
comparison to other organisms.
Scientist: Carl Woese
Included the following: Animalia,
Plantae, Protista, Fungi, Eubacteria, and
Archaebacteria
As is with previous schemas, the different
structures, reproduction, genetic and
biochemical differences, among others are
considered. Metabolic diversity is a new factor
considered which led to Woese’ s classification
