Unit 6: Lesson 3 : The aftermath of war After World War II, the League of Nations was established. The purpose of establishing the League of Nations was to maintain peace in the different countries around the world. The League failed to carry out the mandate with the beginning of World War II. League of Nations: an international diplomatic group developed after World War I as a way to solve disputes between countries before they erupted into open warfare.

Unit 6: Lesson 3 : The aftermath of war World War II led to great destruction all over Europe and Eastern Asia. Many countries returned to the same borders and government systems they had before the war. Europe was in great need of financial aid (money that is given or lent) to recover from the destruction. The US offered aid in the form of the Marshall Plan . The Marshall Plan, also known as the European Recovery Program, was a U.S. program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II. It provided more than $15 billion to help finance rebuilding efforts on the continent.

Unit 6: Lesson 3 : The aftermath of war To prevent further wars and promote international cooperation (working together), the United Nations was established in 1945. The United Nations included 51 original member nations. Five of these countries were permanent (lasting) Security Council members. These were: China, France , the Soviet Union ( Russia today), the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Unit 6: Lesson 3 : The aftermath of war T he United Nations (UN) aims to secure food, medicine, shelter, dignity , clean environment, and safety for people. The United Nations grew to include 193 member states in total. Decisions in the organization are made by the consensus ( agreement) of the member nations. The Chief Executive Officer of the UN is known as the Secretary General. The Secretary General today is António Guterres. He or she is responsible to work with all the members to identify problems and work towards find peaceful solutions to them.

Unit 6: Lesson 3 : The aftermath of war Power shifted to the US & Russia with the weakening of Germany & Japan. Governments in the different European countries started believing more in the importance of democracy( the people choose their representatives ) and in their role in providing basic care to their citizens. The rights of the women took a huge step forward. Technology advanced. New medicines , antibiotics , surgical techniques, and even the first electronic computers emerged during this war.

Unit 6: Lesson 3 : The aftermath of war The Cold War: The Cold War was between the Soviet Union and the USA. It was not a real war, but it was a time of great political tension (stress) that lasted for nearly 45 years. This was a war of power between the two. It peaked between 1948 and 1953 when the US formed the NATO ( North Atlantic Treaty Organization) to provide security against the Soviet Union.
