The Amazing world of gases,

Learning objectives 1 investigate the relationship between: 1.1 volume and pressure at constant temperature of a gas;S10MTIVa-b-21 2. describe the compressibility and expandability of gases 3. cite real life e xamples of devices or materials showing the above mentioned properties

Gases

Gases ….

Describe?

What are gases? >one of the 3 fundamental states of matter >gases have no definite shape and volume >properties are determined by their constituents particles > we’ ll focus on compressibility expandability and diffusibility of gases

Expandability- filling every corner Gases expand to occupy every corner of the container. - the particles are in constant random and have weak intermolecular forces This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

Compressibility- squeezing the invisible Easily compressed because the spaces between their particles are large. Decreasing the volume , increases the pressure

Difussibility - the great mixer Readily mixed with each other due to the constant random motion of their particles - called diffusion Example are smell of perfume spreading across the room

The Kinetic Molecular Theory- underlying explanation * Gases are composed of tiny particles in constant random motion These particles are far apart compared to their size Collision between these particles are elastic The average Kinetic energy of the particle is proportional to the absolute temperature.

Real world example 1. weather balloon 2. scuba diving tank 3. Air fresheners 4. internal combustion engine

Understanding gas properties- a summary Expandability compressibility and diffussibility are fundamental properties of gases. These are explained by KMT Understanding these properties is crucial in many scientific and technological application.

Air unbound, a boundless spree Expands to fill, wild and free Squeezed to tight it yields with grace Sweet perfume, a gentle drift Diffuses far, a subtle gift Gases dance , a playful show Their wondrous traits, we come to know
