ROMANESQUE ART
Romanesque art was
characterizedbyitsveryvigorous
styleinpaintingandsculpture,
lavishlydecoratedmanuscripts,
andretainedmanybasicfeatures
ofRomanarchitecturalstyles.It
wasalsogreatlyinfluencedby
Byzantineartwithahighly
innovativeandcoherentstyle.

ROMANESQUE ART
RomanesqueartistheartofEuropefrom
approximately1000ADtotheriseoftheGothic
styleinthe12thcentury,orlater,dependingon
region.Theprecedingperiodisknownasthe
Pre-Romanesque period.Thetermwas
inventedby19th-centuryarthistorians,
especiallyforRomanesquearchitecture,which
retainedmanybasicfeaturesofRoman
architecturalstyle–mostnotablyround-headed
arches,butalsobarrelvaults,apses,and
acanthus-leafdecoration–buthadalso
developedmanyverydifferentcharacteristics.

GOTHIC ART
•ThebasiccharacteristicsofGothicartstyles

GOTHIC ART

the16thcentury,beforebeingsubsumedinto
Renaissanceart.PrimarymediaintheGothicperiod
includedsculpture,panelpainting,stainedglass,fresco
andilluminatedmanuscripts.Theeasilyrecognizable
shiftsinarchitecturefromRomanesquetoGothic,and
GothictoRenaissancestyles,aretypicallyusedtodefine
theperiodsinartinallmedia,althoughinmanyways
figurativeartdevelopedatadifferentpace.
