Augeas king of E lis , was rich on earth , with countless sheep and cow as well as three hended black bulls and a dozen silver-white bulls . But the king was lazy , and had not cleaned his stables for many years .
Hercules had no need to ask the way ; when he was within fifty miles of the stables he smelt the stench . Holding his nose , he went straight to King Augeas and vowed to clean the yards .
First , he knocked two holes in the farmyard walls ; then , using every bit of his strengh , he built a dam and diverted two nearby rivers . As the swirling waters of the two rivers rushed through the yards and stables , they swep all the dung before them out sea. A few hours later , the stables were clean .
