W ha t ’ s t h e f u ss ? In the end, these are just labels for conditions—physiological, psychological and sociological.

Sex and gender, don’t be confused. S e x i s a p h y siologi c a l c on ditio n , d e t erm i n e d by biological make up. Ge n de r i s a social co n s tructi o n , wh a t it means to be a man or woman.

SEX GENDER SEXUAL ORIENTATION GENDER IDENTITY

The Basic S.O.G.I.E. S.O. - Sexual Orientation – Who you are attracted to. G.I. - Gender Identity – The Gender You Perceive Yourself. G.E. - Gender Expression – Your Mannerisms, how you act, dress, etc.

SEXUAL ORIENTATION - the type of sexual, romantic, emotional/spiritual attraction one feels for others, often labelled based on the gender relationship between the person and the people they are attracted to.

ATTRACTION - the action or power of evoking interest, pleasure, or liking for someone or something. Emotional/Spiritual Attraction an affinity for someone that evokes the want to engage in emotional intimate behavior (e.g., sharing, confiding, trusting, interdepending). Romantic Attraction an affinity for someone that evokes the want to engage in relational intimate behavior (e.g., flirting, dating, marriage). Sexual Attraction an affinity for someone that evokes the want to engage in physical intimate behavior (e.g., kissing, touching, intercourse).

Sexual Orientation An enduring physical , romantic , and/or emotional attraction to another person

Homosexual (Gay & Lesbian) Bisexual Heterosexual Same Both Opposite Sexual Orientation

HOMOSEX U AL G A Y LESBIAN HOMOSEXUAL - a [medical] term used to describe a person primarily emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted to members of the same sex/gender.

And the difference between… a person emotionally, physically, and/or sexually attracted to male/men and females/women. This attraction does not have to be equally split or indicate a level of interest that is the same across the genders or sexes an individual may be attracted to. Asexual having a lack of (or low level of) sexual attraction to others and/or a lack of interest or desire for sex or sexual partners. It is estimated that roughly 1% of the world’s population (70 million people) are asexual, though some believe it is a higher number since many are unaware that asexuality exists as an orientation. Androsexual - attraction to men, males, and/or masculinity . Gynesexual - attracted to woman, females, and/or femininity . Pansexual - a person who experiences sexual, romantic, physical, and/or spiritual attraction for members of all gender identities/expressions.

Demisexual - Someone who does not experience sexual/romantic attraction unless an emotional bond has been formed. Skoliosexual - attracted to genderqueer and transsexual people and expressions (people who don’t identify as cisgender ). Lithsexual : Someone who experiences sexual/romantic attraction but stops experiencing it or does not enjoy it when it is reciprocated.

Polysexual - refers to people who are sexually attracted to more than one gender or sex. Polysexuals often include the idea of a third gender, often regarding transgender as the seperate third gender and subsequently being sexually attracted to people in that category. GENDER IDENTITY Internal sense of being mal e , femal e , or something else .

GENDER IDENTITY Cisgender - a person whose gender identity and biological sex assigned at birth align (e.g., man and male- assigned). A simple way to think about it is if a person is not trans* , they are cisgender.

Transgender denoting or relating to a person whose self- identity does not conform unambiguously to the biological sex assigned at birth. Transgender T r a n s w om a n T r ansman

Transwoman A biologically born male whose gender identity does not conform to his (her) assigned sex at birth.

T r ansman A biologically born female whose gender identity does not conform to her (his) assigned sex at birth.

Transition – this term is primarily used to refer to the process a trans* person undergoes when changing their bodily appearance either to be more congruent with the gender/sex they feel themselves to be and/or to be in harmony with their preferred gender expression. Misgendering - refer to using a word, especially a pronoun or form of address (directed to a transgender person), that does not correctly reflect the gender with which they identify. Other terminologies:

Let’s “transition”… Transsexual - a person who identifies psychologically as a gender/sex other than the one to which they were assigned at birth. Transsexuals often wish to transform their bodies hormonally and surgically to match their inner sense of gender/sex. Transgender – A person who lives as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex assigned at birth. Transvestite – (noun) a person who dresses as the binary opposite gender expression (“cross-dresses”) for any one of many reasons, including relaxation, fun, and sexual gratification (often called a “cross- dresser”) Caitlyn Jenner Chaz Bono Dame Edna

GENDER IDENTITY Genderqueer - a person who does not subscribe to conventional gender distinctions but identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders.

GENDER IDENTITY Agender - a non-binary gender identity or as a statement of not having a gender identity. People who identify as agender may describe themselves as Genderless or lacking gender.

A g ender a person who identifies with neither, both, or a combination of male and female genders.

Bigender – a person who fluctuates between traditionally “woman” and “man” gender-based behavior and identities, identifying with both genders. Gender Fluid – gender fluid is a gender identity best described as a dynamic mix of boy and girl. A person who is gender fluid may always feel like a mix of the two traditional genders, but may feel more man some days, and more woman other days.

Third Gender – a term for a person who does not identify with either man or woman, but identifies with another gender. This gender category is used by societies that recognise three or more genders, both contemporary and historic.

GENDER Expression the external display of one’s gender, through a combination of dress, demeanor, social behavior, and other factors, generally measured on scales of masculinity and femininity . Also referred to as “gender presentation.”

Cross-dresser – someone who wears clothes of another gender/sex. Drag King – someone who performs masculinity theatrically. Drag Queen – someone who performs femininity theatrically. Express Yourself!

Feminine Presenting; Masculine Presenting – a way to describe someone who expresses gender in a more feminine or masculine way, for example in their hair style, demeanor, clothing choice, or style.

SEX a medical term used to refer to the chromosomal, hormonal and anatomical characteristics that are used to classify an individual as female or male or intersex. Often referred to as simply “sex,” “physical sex,” “anatomical sex,” or specifically as “sex assigned *or designated+ at birth.”

INTERSEX is a variation in sex characteristics including chromosomes, gonads, or genitals that do not allow an individual to be distinctly identified as male or female. 1 in 1500 to 1 in 2000 births all around the world, are individuals that are born with intersex conditions.
