BIRTH A J CRONIN PRESENTED BY P.Pradeep kumar PGT English JNV Nalgonda

A J CRONIN Archibald Joseph Cronin (19 July 1896 – 6 January 1981) was a Scottish physician and novelist.[2] His best-known novel, The Citadel (1937), tells of a Scottish doctor in a Welsh mining village, who quickly moves up the career ladder in London. Cronin had observed the venues as a medical inspector of mines and later as a doctor in Harley Street. The book promoted still controversial ideas about medical ethics and helped to inspire the National Health Service.

Background The lesson Birth is excerpted from the novel “ The Citadel ” written by A.J.Cronin. The story is about a young man who is newly out of Medical school and presently working as an assistant under Dr.Edward Page in a small Welsh mining town of Blaenelly.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE LESSON It was nearly midnight. As Andrew was returning home after having a disappointing evening with Christine, his girl friend, he was met by Joe Morgan at the surgery. Joe Morgan was a driller. He and his wife were expecting their first child after twenty years of their married life.

Miners in Whales

The doctor has to put in hard labour in the delivery of the child. When the child is born, it seems to be still-born. This shock could be too much for the Morgans to bear. While the doctor is attending to the mother, the nurse places the baby under the bed among dirty newspapers.

After assuring himself that the mother is safe, the doctor looks for the baby. Finding it under the bed, he at once pulls it out. It was a boy, perfectly formed. The body was warm but was not breathing. At once the doctor sets to revive the child’s breath.

He employs special treatment with the help of cold and warm water, dipping the infant in turns in hot water and cold water. But the doctor’s efforts proved futile. In one last attempt, Andrew pressed and released the pigmy chest of the child. After half an hour’s terrible effort, he is at last successful. The child comes alive. He thanks god and hands the child to the nurse.
