*Folly and Pride Foolish pride affects both main characters throughout the story, Montresor concludes he must have revenge on Fortunado because of his wounded pride. Fortunado is clearly sick he has an absolutely terrible cough but instead of protecting his health he insists on going deeper into catacombs suppered on by the folly of drinking carelessly.
