INTRODUCTION
TheCaviteMutinyof1872wasapivotaluprisingbymilitarypersonnelatFortSanFelipe,the
SpanisharsenalinCavite,Philippines.Thiseventmarkedanearlyattemptatrevolutionas
participantsbelieveditwouldsparkalargernationaluprising.Unfortunately,therevoltwas
unsuccessful,leadingtosevererepercussions;manyparticipantswereexecuted,andgovernment
forcesintensifiedtheircrackdownontheburgeoningnationalistmovement.
ScholarswidelyregardthismutinyasthecatalystforFilipinonationalism,layingthegroundwork
forthePhilippineRevolutionof1896.Thesignificanceofthisuprisingresonatesthroughhistory,
rememberedasoneofthetwelveeventsthatprofoundlyinfluencedPhilippinehistory.
AkeyaspectoftheCaviteMutinywasitsimpactonnotablefigureslikeGomBurZa—Mariano
Gómez,JoséApolonioBurgos,andJacintoZamora.ThesethreeFilipinopriestswereexecutedon
February17,1872,inBagumbayan,Manila,underchargesofsubversionlinkedtothemutiny.Their
deathsleftanindeliblemarkontheFilipinoconsciousness;nationalheroJoséRizaleven
dedicatedhisnovelElFilibusterismototheirmemory.TheCaviteMutinyservesasacrucial
chapterinthenarrativeofFilipinoidentityandresistanceagainstcolonialrule.

GeneraldeFilipinas(Madrid,1895,Vol.III,pp.566-595.)Thisnarrativeof
MonteroyVidal,1normallyagoodhistorian,wassowoefullybiasedthat
Dr.T.H.PardodeTaveracommentedthathe,“innarratingtheCavite
episode,doesnotspeakasahistorian;hespeaksasaSpaniardbenton
pervertingthefactsathispleasure;heismischievously
partial.”2Unsupportedbypositivedocumentaryevidence,thisSpanish
historianexaggeratedthemutinyofafewdisgruntlednativesoldiers
andlaborersintoarevolttooverthrowSpanishrule—aseditious
movement—andinvolvedtheinnocentFilipinopatrioticleader
includingFathers,Gomez,Burgos,andZamora,JoseMa.Basa,Antonio
Ma.Regidor,JoaquinPardodeTavera,andothers.MonteroyVidal’s

themutinyasasignificantrevoltaimedatoverthrowingSpanishruleratherthanamere
insurrectionbydisgruntledsoldiers
MonteroyVidaldescribedthecontextleadingtothemutiny,highlightingthepoliticalclimatein
SpainandtheinfluenceofrevolutionaryideasthatreachedthePhilippines.Henotedthatthe
abolitionofprivilegesforlaborersattheCavitearsenalwasaprimarycatalystfortheuprising.
Themutineersbelievedtheycouldsparkalargernationaluprising,buttheirplanswerethwarted

FilipinoVersionDr.TrinidadHermenigildoPardodeTavera,aFilipinoscholarandresearcher,wrotetheFilipinoversionofthe
bloodyincidentinCavite.Inhispointofview,theincidentwasameremutinybythenativeFilipinosoldiersand
laborersoftheCavitearsenalwhoturnedouttobedissatisfiedwiththeabolitionoftheirprivileges.
Indirectly,TaverablamedGov.Izquierdo'scold-bloodedpoliciessuchastheabolitionofprivilegesofthe
workersandnativearmymembersofthearsenalandtheprohibitionofthefoundingofschoolofartsand
tradesfortheFilipinos,whichthegeneralbelievedasacover-upfortheorganizationofapoliticalclub.
On20January1872,about200mencomprisedofsoldiers,laborersofthearsenal,andresidentsofCavite
headedbySergeantLamadridroseinarmsandassassinatedthecommandingofficerandSpanishofficersin
sight.Theinsurgentswereexpectingsupportfromthebulkofthearmyunfortunately,thatdidn'thappen.The
newsaboutthemutinyreachedauthoritiesinManilaandGen.Izquierdoimmediatelyorderedthereinforcement
ofSpanishtroopsinCavite.

Backgroundand
CausesThemutinywasprimarilytriggeredbytheabolitionofcertainprivilegespreviouslyenjoyedby
FilipinolaborersandsoldiersattheCavitearsenal,suchasexemptionsfromtributeand
forcedlabor(poloyservicio).TheharshpoliciesimplementedbyGovernor-GeneralRafael
Izquierdo,whoruledwithanironfist,exacerbatedtensionsamongthelocalpopulace.The
mutineersbelievedthattheiractionswouldsparkabroaderuprisingagainstSpanishrule,
influencedbyrevolutionaryideascirculatingfromSpainandtheUnitedStates.

TheUprising
OnthenightofJanuary20,theFilipinosoldiersmistakenlyinterpretedfireworks
fromalocalfestivalasasignaltorevolt.TheyseizedcontrolofFortSanFelipe,
killingseveralSpanishofficers.However,theirplansquicklyunraveledasthey
failedtoreceivetheanticipatedsupportfromotherFilipinotroopsstationedin
Manila.TheSpanishauthoritiesrespondedswiftly,sendingreinforcementsto
suppresstheuprising

Conclusion
TheCaviteMutinyof1872isapivotaleventinPhilippinehistory,markingthebeginningofa
nationalisticmovementthatwouldeventuallyleadtothePhilippineRevolution.Theharsh
responsefromtheSpanishcolonialgovernmentonlyfueledthedesireforindependenceamong
Filipinos,settingthestageforfutureuprisingsandtheeventualestablishmentofthePhilippine
Republic.
Aftermath
Themutinywasswiftlyquelled,leadingtosevererepercussionsfortheparticipants.
Governor-GeneralIzquierdoorderedtheexecutionofmanyinvolved,includingthe
prominentFilipinopriestsknownasGomburza(Gomez,Burgos,andZamora),who
werefalselyimplicatedasinstigatorsoftherevolt.TheirexecutiononFebruary17,
1872,becamearallyingpointforFilipinonationalistsandsignificantlyinfluencedthe
growingmovementforindependence
