INTRODUCTION Shylock is an important character in the merchant of venice play. Shylock is a venetian jewish money lender. Shylock is the play’s principal antagonist. He is a rich jew of venice. He is blind follower of his religion. He is a tyrannical father.
Shylock is one of the main characters in william shakespeare’s the merchant of venice, a jewish merchant living in a predominantly christian environment. As the merchant,he exemplifies many negative character traits that we abhor in others and in ourselves:greed,jealousy and vengeance.
Shylock as a greedy man Shylock is a greedy fellow. He loves money very much When his daughter jessica runs away with his gold , he laments more for his gold than his daughter. He gives loan to others on high interest. Shylock is hungry for money. Shylock is worshipper of money.
Shylock’s physique Shylock is an old jew with long beard and bent back. He wears long cloak. Thus , he appears older than he is. He is a fat man.
Shylock’s revengeful and blood thirsty nature Shylock plans to take his revenge upon antonio because he ill-treated him. At the court scene he rejected portia’s plea for mercy. At court scene he also rejected appeals from the duke and other to move him pity.

Shylock as tyrannical father Shylock is a narrow minded and tyrannical father. He puts all kinds of restrictions upon his daughter. He does not allow her daughter to watch from the windows of her house a procession passing through the street below. His daughter hates him because of his tyrannical attitude towards her.
Shylok’s different figure Tragic figure Villain figure Shylock demonstrated qualities of a tragic hero by inviting the audience to feel sympathetic for him in various ways. Shylock can be called a tragic hero because he is undone by a tragic flaw in the end. Being a jew, shylock is already shown to be “evil” to christians. He is a villain in that he is clearly the antagonist of the play. Shylock is villainous due to the fact that he is a usurer and a jew. Shylock is out for one pound of antonio’s flesh ,that shows shylock as a villain.

He has peculiar knowledge of human nature. He is a cunning usurer. Since shylock is the villain of the drama,he is accounted by all immoral,rude,inhuman and tight fisted. To him there is no importance of morality before accumulating wealth.
His idea of revenge His communal feelings Shylock intends to take revenge from antonio because he has abused him publicly many times. He has called him a dog, a cur, an usurer, a cut throat and what not. Shylock is cruel, cunning, intolerant to christians, greedy and fundamentalist. He is an ideal jew. he hates christians. He says , ” I will buy with you, sell with you , walk with you, talk with you but I can not eat and drink with you”
