4. The chronology The Chernobyl accident was a combination of poor design of the nuclear power plant, which also did not have a containment facility, together with errors made by its operators. It was the early morning of April 26, 1986, just at 1:23 am when reactor number 4 exploded. First the pipes exploded, then the roof of the reactor blew off and a graphite fire started that lasted 10 days and the core melted. The pollution reached the atmosphere and the wind was responsible for spreading it to different regions. Surrounding areas located in Ukraine, Belarus and Russia, as well as some European countries, were affected.
