ABOUT THE AUTHOR MY CHILDHOOD is an extract taken from the autobiophy of eleventh president A. P. J. Abdul Kalam from “Wings of Fire”. His full name is Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam . He was a great scientist. He studied physics and aerospace engineering He wrote many books like India 2020,Wings of Fire, Ignited Minds, Guilding Souls.His books now considered as the Treasure of the Literature world.

BACKGROUND A.P.J Abdul Kalam was born into a middle–class Muslim Tamil family. His place of birth is Rameswaram in the erstwhile Madras State . On the contrary, his parents were very tall and handsome. They were good looking. He had three close friends in his childhood — Ramanadha Sastry , Sivaprakasan and Aravindan. All these boys were from orthodox Hindu Brahmin families. Religion was not a barrier in their friendship

PLACE Abdul Kalam was living in their ancestral house which was built in the middle of nineteenth century. It was a Large Pucca house made up of limestone and brick, on the Mosque street in the Rameswaram .

FAMILY In A. P. J. Abdul Kalam family there were his father Jainulabdeen and his mother Ashiamma four brothers and one sister. Kalam was youngest of his four brothers. Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and a leader of local mosque. During the annual Shri Sita Rama Kalyanam Ceremony A.P.J Abdul Kalam Family used to arrange boats with a special platform for carrying idols of Lord. The temple to the marriage site , situated middle of the Poncalled Rama Tirtha which was near Kalam’s house. APJ says that they listened to stories of the Ramayana and the life of the Prophet from their mother and grandmother as bed time storie s .

THE FIRST JOB The in 1939 . during second world war their were isolated ,and was completely unaffected by the war but soon when India was forced to join allied forces and something like a state of emergency was declared. The first casualtycame in the form of suspension of train at rameswaram station . The newspapers had to be bundled and thrown out of the moving train on the rameswarm road between rameswaram and dhanuskodi . A.P.J kalam cousin samsuddin distributed newspapers in rameswaram.He need a helping hand to catch newespapers ,so a.P.J abdul kalam filled the slot and earn their first wages. A.P.J abdul kalam can still feel the surge of pride in earning their own money for first time.

THE TEACHER A new teacher came at Rameshawaram Elementary school. When he saw that a muslim boy was sitting with a hindu priest he got outraged and asked adbul kalam to go and sit on the last bench Abdul used to sit with his friend Ramanadha sastry , they both felt really sad after being separated due to religious reasons. He went home and narrated the incident to his parents. Lakshmana sastry told the teacher not to spread the poison of social inequality and asked to either resign or apologise . He apologized and realized his mistake and from then transformed into a new person.

THE MEAL His science teacher , Sivasubramania Iyer used to break social barriers against social inequality. Once he invited Abdul for a meal to his house. His wife however was shocked by the idea of a muslim dining in his kitchen and refused to serve him in her kitchen. Iyer was neither angry nor sad instead he fed abdul from his own hands and sat beside him to eat his own meal, whereas her wife watched from the kitchen Next weekend again his teacher invited him again for the dinner and told Abdul not to get upset . When he visited his teachers house next week Subramania Iyer’s wife herself took him inside her kitchen and served him food from his own hands.

ENVIRONMENT BROUGHT UP IN Grew up in a morally educated society Parents never had formal education Kept in a environment away from stereotypes Honesty ,truthfulness from his father ,deep kindness and goodness from his mother highlights of his personality A bright student from whom people expected a lot Parents never stopped his desire to explore and reach new extent in studies

STUDY OPPORTUNITY As soon as the second world war got over abdul kalam wanted to leave Rameswaram and go to the district headquarters in Ramanathapuram for higher studies His parents were very open minded and supportive to Kalam It was a life-changing opportunity given to Kalam Teachings We should never stop from exploring It is our life and we are one’s who are to rule it Our decisions affect our life so never allow anybody else to take it for you
