¿Why is the use of the computer becoming more widespread every day? Because computers simplify day-to-day life. Computers are a helpful and powerful tool in the fields of communication, study and work. They perform a lot of activities with accuracy and speed.

¿what does a computer consist of? A computer consists of a central processing unit (CPU), input devices (keyboard, mouse and scanner), output devices (monitors and printers), a bus and storage devices. The physical computer and its components are called 'hardware'. The CPU is a microprocessor, a type of integrated circuit. It's got a silicon chip that contains millions of electrical components -resistors, capacitors and transistors. These components control the flow of electrical currents that give instructions to the computer. The keyboard and the mouse are the elements that allow the user to communicate with the computer. The scanner is a piece of equipment used for copying a picture or document into a computer. The monitor and the printer are the components that display data-they present the information to the user. The bus is a channel hat contains a lot of parallel wires and connects the computer components.

Memory can be stored inside the circuitry of a computer on chips or outside the circuitry in external storage devices - hard drives, floppy disk drives and CD.

¿ How is information stored ? Information is stored in the form of binarydigits or bits (0s or 15). Each 0 or 1 is called a bit. A group of 8 bits is a byte. A byte can store alphabetical symbols, numbers and a lot of other data. Pulses of current that represent Os and is travel along electronic paths, through integrated circuits and are finally shown on the computer screen in the form of letters and numbers.

¿Why do computers need programs? Because without programs computers can't do any work. The programs that computers use are called 'software'. Operating systems are a category of software that coordinate the computer and its components. Windows and MS-DOS are the most popular. The man who designed them is called Bill Gates. He is the man who runs Microsoft, the leading computer software company in the USA.
