The Different Badminton Strokes
Badminton is a racquet sport that requires both physical endurance and technique. There are various types of badminton strokes or shots that a player must master in order to compete at a high level. . What is Badminton?
A badminton stroke is the movement of the player’s racket with an intention to hit the shuttle. It is important to note here that only the intention of hitting the shuttle is already considered a stroke. So, you could do a stroke and fail to hit the shuttle and that would still be considered a stroke. The strokes are not about what happens after you have hit the shuttle, that is what the shots are. The strokes are about what happens before you hit the shuttle, how do you hold your racket, how do you swing it, and in which location. What is a Badminton Stroke?
What are the different types of badminton strokes? Forehand Overhead Stroke 01 Forehand Underhand Stroke 03 Backhand Underhand stroke 04 Overhand Backhand Stroke 02
Forehand Overhead Stroke The forehand overhead stroke is a badminton stroke that is performed with the forehand grip and above the level of the chest. It is an offensive stroke because the shuttle can have a downwards trajectory to go over the net .
To perform the stroke, you should stretch your racket arm as far back as possible, stretch out your non-racket arm, inhale, and then exhale as you swing your racket forward .
Overhead Backhand Stroke The overhead backhand stroke is a badminton stroke that is performed with the backhand grip and above the level of the chest.
Draw the racket back high and early behind your shoulder. Contact the shuttlecock at the highest point above your shoulder, using the non-racket arm for counterbalance. Rotate the shoulders and hips, following through to the opposite side of the body.
Forehand Underhand Stroke performed when you take a shuttle in front of you (normally when your opponent hits a drop shot to you). It’s fairly easy to inject power into underarm strokes (compared to overhead strokes). Therefore, you do not need to worry about failing to generate the sufficient strength into your underarm strokes.
Snap your wrist and hit the shuttle along its original trajectory. Follow through upward with the racket. Make sure the shuttle is well in front of you and not to your side. The underhand clear should drop perpendicular to the ground and land between the baseline and the long doubles service line.
Backhand Underhand stroke a low shot on the backhand side is a shot that is commonly used in defensive play. It is played on the non-racket side of the body, with the racket held below the player's hand.
Your dominant leg should always be at the front when you hit an underarm stroke. Swing upwards. Ensure that you complete your swing. This means that upon contact with the shuttle, continue with the swinging motion. Just before your racket makes contact with the shuttle, flick your wrist to generate the power for your underarm stroke.
In conclusion, badminton strokes are fundamental in the game of badminton. Whether it's to attack, defend, or surprise the opponent, the various shots are important in a player's arsenal. By mastering the different shots, players can gain greater control of the game and increase their chances of winning.
