Spelling
It is sometimes difficult to find a word in the dictionary if you do not know how the first sound is
written. Here are the most common difficulties.
1. The first letter is silent
wh- is sometimes spoken as /h-/ as in who /hu:/, whole /ho Ul/.
wr- is spoken as /r-/ as in write /riat/, wrist /rist/.
kn- is spoken as /n-/ as in knife /naif/, know /no
U/.
ho- is sometime spoken as /
QQQQ-/ as in honest / Q:.nist/ , hour /a Ur/.
ps- is spoken as /s-/ as in psychology /saik

pn- is splken as /n-/ as pneumonia /nu:mo

2. The second letter is silent
