GIFTS OF COMMUNICATION | UTTERANCE 1. GIFT OF PROPHECY propheteia - comes from the verb prophemi which means "to speak forth“; "to speak for another“; “to shine before” PURPOSE For the purpose of edification (I Corinthians 14:3, 4, 31 cf. Matthew 16:18) For exhortation For “Comforting” Element of prediction Conviction of unbelievers and made manifest the secret of his heart Bring understanding of God’s mysteries (I Cor. 1:31) The gift of prophecy is manifested when believers speak the mind of God, by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and not from their own thoughts. It is supernatural speech in a known language

GIFT OF TONGUES glossa – the tongue , a tongue, language PURPOSE Give evidence of Holy Spirit baptism (Acts 2:4) and will remain for the rest of his life Speak supernaturally to God (I Corinthians 14:2). To pray with the Spirit is to bypass the mind (Romans 8:27) Magnifies God in the process of speaking in tongues (Acts 10:46; I Corinthians 14:15-17) It brings supernatural refreshment to the whole man (Isaiah 28:11-12) It builds up or edifies the speaker (I Corinthians 14:4) It stimulates faith since tongues must be exercised 1n faith (Jude 20) It brings the unruly tongue under subjection (James 3:8) It is the yielding of the tongue to the Holy Spirit, to speak in tongues, which is a step towards fully yielding our members to God It is a sign to the unbeliever (I Corinthians 14:22). It brings God's response to the congregation by means of its function and its interpretation (I Corinthians 14:13). It arrests the attention of the audiance (Acts 2:6) supernatural utterance by the Holy Spirit in language never learned by the speaker, not understood by the mind of the speaker, nearly always not understood by the hearer

INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES Hermenia glosson – interpretation of tongues PURPOSE The gift of tongues would be rendered useless without the gift of interpretation Without the interpretation of tongues, edification from the same would be lost The combination of these two gifts would be of equal value as prophecy (I Corinthians 14:5) The function of these two gifts demonstrates the working relationship within the body of Christ He who prays in tongues "could interpret his prayer if God so willed... Would mean a great deal to Spiritual edification is not an operation of the mind of the interpreter but the mind of the Spirit of God. The interpreter never understands the tongue he is interpreting, and it is no part of his task to provide equivalent terms in his own tongue for the supernatural words spoken
