The roots of HIPAA stem from the 1990s, when it first
became apparent that the healthcare industry would
become more efficient with digital medical records.
When HIPAA was passed in 1996, it included standards
& rules focused on regulating healthcare data in terms
of portability of patient health data and protection of
medical privacy
