The Human Person as an Embodied Spirit The human person is an important subject in Philosophy and understanding the nature and condition of the person is one of the foremost goals of the discipline.
Related terms: Man is the general term commonly used to refer to the entire human race. Human refers to man as a species - Homo sapiens sapiens or modern human beings. Human being is used to separate man from other Human Classifications like animals. Person refers to a human being granted recognition of certain rights, protection, responsibilities, and dignity above all. Personhood refers to the state of being a person. Human nature refers to the characteristics that distinguish humans from all other creatures. Examples of these characteristics include thinking, feeling and acting.
What is Human person? The human being is recognized not only as a distinct species - Homo sapiens sapiens , but as a unique being, an individual person possessing awareness of the self. There are two general kinds to distinguish a human person: Cognitive Self (something within and cannot be physically seen) refers to the characteristics a human person such as beliefs, desire, dreams, and intentions. Physical Self (something can be seen in his/her physical appearance) which deals with the essential features of the human, this includes his/her body type, strength and appearances.
Special traits make a human a distinct individual person . Self-awareness. refers to the person having a clear perception of oneself, including his or her thoughts, emotions, identity, and actions. The human is defined by a deeper awareness which is driven by rationality or human thought. This awareness gives rise to the notion of the “self” , which philosophers describe as the person who is actively aware that he/she is perceiving and experiencing reality . Thus, the self represents man’s interiority or one’s inner life and identity.
2. Self-determination. refers to the capability of persons to make choices and decisions based on their own preferences, monitor and regulate their actions , and be goal-oriented and self directed . Our free will enables us to do actions whenever we want to and makes self-determination possible. Another element of human action is the morality or the goodness or badness of an act. Consequence is the result or effect of an action or condition.
3. Externality. refers to the capability to reach out and interact with others and the world. Philosophers consider man a social being , and that a person never exists in isolation. 4. Dignity. refers to the innate right to be valued and respected. Philosophers consider all humans as having an inherent worth , value and importance.
The human person is an Embodied Spirit. - refers to the inseparable union of human body and soul . - This means that both the human body and the spirit define human nature and experience. Inseparable which also means the body and soul work together at all times. The body and spirit come together to form a whole , and this integration defines the embodiment of the person.
Human Transcendence St. Thomas Aquinas, a philosopher, said that “of all creatures, human beings have the unique power to change themselves and things for the better.” It refers to our ability to explore and surpass our limits . We are able to transcend our limits through our physical and mental abilities.
