The Koalas

Interesting facts Koalas have fingerprints. Much like humans, each one of a koala's fingerprints is unique to them and this is crucial in helping scientists study koalas and track them.  They smell like eucalyptus. Female koalas have an odour that is similar to eucalyptus which acts as an insect repellent. This is different to the male koalas who have a stronger, wood smell. Baby koalas are attached to their mothers. They spend on average six months in their mother's pouch and then another six riding on their back. They stay by the side of their mothers until another koala is born.  There are three subspecies of koalas which include the Queensland koala, the New South Wales koala and the Victorian koala. 2

Physical Characteristics 3 The koala is a mammal with a robust body, which has a gray fur on its back, with a lighter belly. The hind limbs are short, with large feet and have 5 toes, each hand also has 5 toes, of which 2 are opposed to the other 3. Each toe has a strong and large claw . The average weight of these animals is 12 kg in males and 8 kg in females.

Habitat 4 The eucalyptus forests of eastern Australia are its only habitat. Koalas that lives in less warm climates are generally larger and have darker and thicker fur than those living in warmer climates.

Lifestyle 5 Koalas live in trees and do most of their activities at night. They are not comfortable on the ground , where they move on all fours . They only come down to the ground to change trees . To conserve energy , they sleep for 20 hours a day . Their natural predators include dingoes, owls, eagles and python snakes. Drought periods and fires are also dangerous for them.

Food 6 Koalas only eat the leaves, bark, and also the fruits of eucalyptus trees Eat around 1 and a half kilos of leaves every night because they only absorb around a quarter of what they consume.

Senses 7 As they are nocturnal animals, they have good auditory faculties. Their vision is very poor . The koala's nose is extremely sensitive. This provides them with fundamental information for their survival and territory, and descendants.

Descendants 8 The female has a single very small joey, which will move to the mother's marsupial pouch immediately after birth and will remain in it for 6 months, drinking only milk in these time. Baby koalas are called Joeys.

Extinction 9 An important decrease in koala populations is for the big cut of trees and also to traffic accidents. They have also a decline in their population because of human development, forest fires, and global warming, and they could disappear within decades.

Opinion I have learned a lot about these animals, we must all help for their habitat does not disappear and future generations can learn about it.
