3. About the author Walter de la Mare was born on 25 th April 1873, His father, James Edward Delamaere, was an official of the Bank of England. His mother, Lucy Sophia (Browning) Delamare, He was educated in London at St. Paul's Cathedral Choir School, which he left at age 16. He was an English poet, short story writer and novelist. He is probably best remembered for his work for children and for his poem "The Listeners". He also wrote some subtle psychological horror stories,

5. Description of the poem The Listeners creates an atmosphere of mystery, eeriness and strange wonder. A lot of is left to the reader imagination. The poem invites all the young minders to accompany the lonely traveller on his strange traveller on his strange visit to a solitary castle, deep within a dark forest. The setting is perfect for a ghost story to unfold and there is a reference to the “Listeners” who listen silently to the traveller’s fervent call.

6. In this poem 'The Listener' speaks about a traveller on horseback, who had visited an empty house in a forest, On a moonlight night. He knocked on the door hoping against hope to get an expected response. To his utter dismay, the only listeners were a host of ghosts. Nobody responded to his voice.
