The Making of a Scientist
by Robert Peterson
•This is a story of a young and bright scientist
named Richard H.Ebright.
•He grew up on north of Reading
Pennsylvania.
•At the age of 22 he excited the scientific world
with his theory of cells.
•As a child he collected rocks ,fossils and coins.

Collection of 25 Species of Butterflies
Early Childhood Talent
By the time he was in
second grade,hehad
collected all the twenty
five species of the
butterflies found around
his hometown in six
weeks.

The Role of his Mother
•He was her -
•(i) whole life after his father’s death,
•(ii) Only companion.
•She would find work for him that would make him
learn new things, if he does not have any some day.
•He liked it and wanted to learn too.

The Role of his Mother
•A great driving force in encouraging him to become a
scientist.
•Always encouraged him and developed his interest in
learning.
•Took him on trips.
•Bought him telescope, microscopes .
cameras,mountingmaterials etc.
•Got him the book’ The Travels of Monarch X’.

The Travels of MONARCH X
The Book that Changed
his World
•The book is about how butterflies
migrate to Central America.
•It was written by Dr.Frederick
Urkuhartof the University of
Toronto,Canada.
•Readers were invited to help study
butterfly migration.
•He also asked readers to tag
butterflies for research.
•This book opened a world of science
to this young collector.

The Travels of MONARCH X
•But it was impossible to catch so
many butterflies in six weeks.
•So he started raising a flock of
butterflies in the basement of his
house.
•He would catch a female
monarch,takeher eggs and raise
them.(Life Cycle)
•But as he didn’t get much feedback
he started losing interest in it.

His 7
th
Grade Experiment :
Slides of Frog Tissues
•When he was in his seventh
grade,heparticipated in a
science fair and lost.
•Here he learnt that science
was not a neat display of
something but real science
was doing real experiments.
•He had just shown slides of
frog tissues.

Theory: Viceroy Butterflies Copy Monarchs
Viceroy Butterfly
Monarch Butterfly
•Viceroys are the food of birds.
•Viceroys taste good whereas
monarchs do not taste good for
birds.
•The viceroys look like monarchs
because they want to trick the
birds and save themselves.
•This project was placed first in
the zoology division

Twelve Tiny gold Spots
•Everyone assumed that the twelve tiny gold spots on a
monarch pupa were just ornamental but
Dr.Urquhart didn’t believe it
•To find the answer Ebrightand another excellent science
student first had to build a device that showed the spots
were producing a hormone necessary for the butterfly’s full
development.
•This project won Ebrightfirst place in the country fair and
entry into the International Science Fair.
