The Mission of The Church The church has a mission, or a work to do in this world. In some of His last words to His disciples, Jesus made that mission or work very clear. Matthew 28: 19-20 “Go ye therefore and teach all nation, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit: teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you…”
Just before He ascended to heaven, Jesus promised the power of the Holy Spirit to His disciples and again outlined to them their mission to the world. Acts 1: 8 “But ye shall received power after that the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
It is very clear, from the command of Jesus, that the mission or work of the church is to carry His message of salvation to the whole world. However, have you ever stopped to think why Jesus has asked us to “go to all “nations” , to “teach” and “baptized” people and to be “witnesses” to all tribes, clans and languages in the world?
God wants all men and women everywhere to be set free from the bondage of sin and to fine forgiveness and peace in His love. However, there is an even greater reason why God has established His church on earth. The apostle Paul helps to understand that reason:
2 Cor. 5: 18 “ And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given us the ministry of reconciliation. ” The world “reconcile” means to join together back again.” to restore broken relationships.” This is the mission of the church. To reconcile lost people; to reconcile a lost world, a lost creation of God.. It is the ministry of the church to help restore the broken relationship between God and man. This is why God has placed His church in the world. The church exist as God’s agent or representative to reconcile, or to help bring sinful mankind back into relationship with God.
The salvation of men and women is only part of God’s plan. God is working towards the day when not only people, but the whole universe will be reconciled to Him. On that day everything will be joined with God again in a relationship of perfect unity and harmony. It is the mission of the church to assist God in that great plan.
THE CHURCH IN EDEN Man in Perfect Relationship with God Genesis 1: 26-27 “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness… so God created man in His own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.” Man was made in God’s image. He resembled God in looks and in spiritual and in intellectual capability.
Genesis 2:2,3 “And on the seventh-day God ended His work which he had made; and He rested on the Seventh-day from all His work which He had made…And God blessed the Seventh-day and sanctified it…” The Sabbath was made so that man could commune with God in spiritual relationship. Genesis 3: 8, 9 “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day… and the Lord God called unto Adam and said unto him, where art thou?
In Eden man was permitted to walk with God and talk with Him face to face. Man and God had a perfect one to one relationship. Man in perfect relationship with his fellowman. Genesis 2: 18 “And the Lord God said, it is not good for a man to be alone. I will make an helpmate for him.”
Genesis 2:24 “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.” Genesis 3: 28 “And God bless them and God unto them, “Be fruitful and multiply and replenish the earth..”
God did not intent that man should live alone on the earth. God give a wife to Adam for companionship. God commanded that the earth should be filled with people. Man was to be as social person. In his relationships with other people he was to find fulfillment in life.
Man in perfect relationship with creation Genesis 1: 26, 28 “Let us make man in our image… and let him have dominion over the fish of the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth.
Man was given a perfect creation in which to dwell. He was to watch over it and care for it, maintaining a balance relationship between man and nature. Man to God relationship-perfect Man to man relationship-perfect Man to creation relationship-perfect
SIN-BROKEN RELATIONSHIP Man’s perfect relationship with God is broken Genesis 3: 6-10 “And the Lord God called unto Adam, where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden and I was afraid…” Genesis 3:24 “So He drove out the man; and He placed at the East of the garden of Eden. Cherubims , and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life..”
When man sinned, his perfect relationship with was destroyed. His first creation was to fear god, (v-10) and then God was forced to expel him from His presence in the garden, (v-24) Man’s perfect relationship with his fellowman is broken Genesis 3: 12 “And the man said, The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.”
Here is the first disagreement between Adam and Eve. Adam places the blame of his own sin upon Eve. This attempt to blame Eve revealed the break in his relationship with her. Genesis 4: 8 “..and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him.”
Here is the first murder. Another example of man’s broken relationship with his fellowman. Man’s perfect relationship with creation is broken Genesis 3:17-19 ..”cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; thorns also and thistles shall bring it forth to thee… in the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return to it…”
Because of man’s sins, his relationship with God, with his fellowman, and with creation have all changed. The peace, harmony and unity of Eden is lost. Man is now separated from God, he is now out of harmony with his fellowman and he no longer control of nature.
