The Original 13 C olonies

Settlement began in 1607 Founded by the London Company Became a Royal Colony in 1624 1. Virginia Four of the first five American presidents came from Virginia: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe. Name after Queen Elizabeth of England, who was famous for never marrying. Therefore; she was known as “The Virgin Queen.”

Settled in Plymouth in 1620 Settled in Massachusetts Bay in 1630 These two settlements came together in 1691 and became a Royal Colony. 2. Massachusetts Inhabitants of Massachusetts were radical Protestants, known as Puritans. They are also known as the Pilgrims.

Settled in 1623 by John Mason Became a Royal colony in 1679 This colony was created to become a fishing colony 3. New Hampshire

Settled in 1634 Lord Baltimore was given a royal charter by Charles I. Maryland was named in honor of the King’s wife. 4. Maryland

Settled in 1635 by Thomas Hooker This colony began as three distinct settlements, but were eventually combined into a single royal charter in 1662. 5. Connecticut 3 settlements : Windsor Wethersfield Hartford
