: the process by which different kinds of living organisms
are thought to have developed and diversified from
earlier forms during the history of the earth.

Process of Evolution
Evolution can be seen as a two-step process.
First, hereditary variation takes place; second, selection
is made of those genetic variants that will be passed on
most effectively to the following generations.

Did you know that all modern dogs
came from their wolf ancestry?
Dogs were probably domesticated by accident, when
wolves began trailing ancient hunter-gatherers to snack on
their garbage. Docile wolves may have been slipped extra
food scraps, the theory goes, so they survived better, and
passed on their genes. Eventually, these friendly wolves
evolved into dogs.

Historical Developments

Thomas Malthus
known for his theory, called the Malthusian Theory;
●An Economist and Philosopher
●Believed that populations grow geometrically while
resources slowly increase or not at all, leading to
competition.
●He argued that there is a constant struggle for existence
due to limited resources, which leads to competition
among individuals for survival.

Charles Darwin
known as the “Father of Evolution”;
●Develop the Theory of Evolution.
●Famous work: “On the Origin of Species” in 1859.
●Emphasized the role of adaptation in evolution.

Carl Linnaeus
also known as Carl von Linnéor Carolus Linnaeus, is often
called the Father of Taxonomy;
●Most famous for creating a system of naming plants
and animals—a system we still use today.
●This system is known as the binomial system, whereby
each species of plant and animal is given a genus name
followed by a specific name (species), with both names
being in Latin.

Alfred Russell Wallace
Independently developed the theory of natural selection;
●Realized that species evolved because fittest
individuals survived and reproduced passing their
advantageous characters.
●Co-authored the first paper with Darwin on the
subject.

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck
Lamarck’s theory of evolution;
●Proposed the Theory of Inheritance of Acquired Traits
and Theory of Use and Disuse.
●Suggested that characteristics developed during an
organism's lifetime could be passed on to offspring.

Lamarckian vs.
Darwinian Theory
What is their diferrence?

Lamarckian vs. Darwinian Evolution
When an organism is fit and can
adapt to its environment, it has
abetter chance to survive and
more chance to reprouce.
Orgnisms change during
their lifetime to survive then
pass these changes to
their offspring.
Acquired Traits Natural Selection

Lamarckian Theory

Darwinian Theory

“It is not the strongest of the species that
survives, not the most intelligent that
survives. It is the one that is the most
adaptable to change.”
—Charles Darwin
