People who follow Islam are known as Muslims. Muslims believe that Islam has always existed and was revealed to them through a number of people called prophets. Islam Islam is the world’s second largest religion. It teaches that Allah (God) is merciful, powerful and unique and that Muslims (followers of Islam) can call on Him when they are in need and distressed. It is believed that Muhammad (PBUH) was the last of Allah’s prophets and the one who delivered his final message. The Prophet’s name is held in such esteem by Muslims that whenever his name is said or written, the phrase ‘Peace Be Upon Him’ is said or written immediately afterwards. This is often shortened to ‘PBUH’. Did you know…? The word prophet means ‘messenger’.
When Muslims handle or touch the Qur’an they have to follow certain rules. They must be clean and wash in special ways called ablutions. The Qur’an The Qur’an is the scripture of Islam, which is written in Arabic. Muslims believe it was revealed by Allah to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) over many years. The Qur’an is the sacred word of Allah and it provides teachings and guidance on how to live a good life.
According to tradition, the Angel Jibril appeared to Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) while he was quietly meditating in a cave on Mount Hira in AD 610. Angel Jibril revealed the first verses of the Qur’an, the literal word of Allah, to Muhammad (PBUH) and commanded him to “ Iqra ”, which means recite or tell. The Revelation of the Qur’an Muhammad (PBUH) was born in Mecca in Saudi Arabia in AD 570. He worked as a merchant and became known for his honesty. He was a deeply spiritual person and would often meditate on Mount Hira.
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Over the next 22 years, Muhammad (PBUH) received more revelations from Allah. After receiving them, Muhammad (PBUH) would recite them to others. These revelations were then written down as the Qur’an. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) spent the rest of his life encouraging others to read and write the word of Allah. The principle message of Islam is that there is no god but Allah and that life should be lived in submission to Him.
Pilgrimages The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) died in AD 632 in Medina, where he is buried. He is recognised as being the final prophet of Islam. Many Muslims today travel on pilgrimages to his birthplace, as a sign of respect and to pray. Mecca
