Memory Amanda Epasinghe Memory Failure Forgetting Psychology of 2 The process of acquiring, storing & retrieving information The loss of information stored in memory

Memory Storage Memory storing Retrieval Memory access Encoding Memory input Sensory Memory STM LTM Forgetting Forgetting curve 3

Memory storing Sensory store (Immediate memory) STM LTM - When Info first comes in (only second to several) Ex:- Dialing a number - S ome info may move to next level - Can last a little bit longer (20-30 seconds) - Some info can move into the next level Explicit/ Declarative memory Implicit/Non-declarative memory Ex:- Tying shoelace Semantic memory (general knowledge – Facts ) Ex: - Capital of France Episodic memory (personal information – An event ) Ex: events of your day 4

Memory & Structure of the Brain 5

Remembering semantic tasks (General knowledge) 6

Transfers new learnings into “Long term memory” 7

Processing procedural memories (retrieving infor to perform “Learned skills”) Ex:- Playing piano 8

Processing new declarative memory (LTM) 9

Forgetting – Memory failure Encode the memory properly “Retrieval Failure” Transience (lasting only for a short time) Forgetting things over time Ex:- Not remembering what was taught at lecture Store it properly Fail to retrieve it 10

“Forgetting Curve” Herman Ebbinghaus Memory Days Overtime what we learn will fade Reviewing the infor repeatedly Memory flatten out Will offer a long term memory 11

Take home message Brain structure keeps changing all the time When we learn something new Our nerves will form new connections Before learning – After learning 12 Connections in brain when born Connections when grown up But neural connections will be lost if not used
