CONTAIN 2 Introduction About Robert Frost Describe the Stanzas Theme of the poem
Introduction 3 This poem is taken from a book called “ Mountain Interval ” work by Robert Frost. This poem beautifully explains us about the reality of life. In this poem, poet nicely compares the reality of life with nature and tells that there are many ways of life but we can’t go through every way so we have to choose any one.
About Robert Frost 4 Robert Frost (March 26, 1874 – January 29, 1963) was an American poet. He is well known for his realistic writings of rural life His first poem “My Butterfly” was published on November 8, 1894 in the edition of New York Independent. Robert Frost published his first book of poetry A Boy’s Will in 1913 and soon North of Boston in 1914 which made him famous and his reputation as poet. Stanza : 1 5 “Two roads diverged in a yellow wood And sorry I could not travel both” Explanation: Poet is describing fork in the road. Immediately, he realizes that as a traveller travelling both the roads is impossible. Here two roads are meant two ways of life. The woods are yellow means that it probably falls and leaves are turning yellow. Here poet wants to travel through both road at once, but since it’s impossible he has to choose one road. Poet is “ sorry ” as he can’t travel both roads, suggesting regret.
Stanza : 1 “And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth” Explanation : Because of the impossibility of traveling both roads, the speaker stands there trying to choose which path he's going to take. However, the poet wants to go down both paths and is thinking about it hard. He is staring down one road, trying to see where it goes. The small plants and greenery of the woods, blocks his view. Here, there is actual meaning of this poem. Poet is telling about the fork in the road of his life and not actual road. He is trying to peer into future but poet can’t predict the future so he can only able to see the path. 6
Stanza : 2 7 “Then took the other, as just as fair And having perhaps the better claim, Because it was grassy and wanted wear” Explanation: From the phrase “ as just as fair ” poet is telling about the right choice. So he was choosing between two roads, or futures, that were different but potentially equally good. He is still pretty uncertain when he explains second path is better. So he tells possibly it is better. The poet tells that this path seems like it hasn't been walked on very much, because it's grassy and doesn't look worn, so he tells this path better.
Stanza : 2 8 “Though as for that, the passing there Had worn them really about the same” Explanation: After travelling through the road, he changes his mind and admits that maybe both the roads were equally travelled. The “ as for that ” refers to the path being less worn. " The passing there " refers to travelers passed, probably on foot just like poet, that may have worn the paths down.
Stanza : 3 9 “And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black” Explanation: Here, again, the poet found both the paths looking same. Perhaps, he goes in the flashback. It was tough for him to recognize the real road as in the morning he was the first person to walk on the road. He couldn’t decide the right path as no step had smashed the leaves on the roads to allow him to go for the right one.
Stanza : 3 10 “Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way, I doubted if I should ever come back” Explanation: Here “ way leads on way ” means one road lead to another, and then another until you end up very far from where you started. Because of this, he doesn't think he'll ever be able to come back and take that other path. Here actual meaning is that in any life decision, we think we can come back and try a different option later. But sometimes our decisions take us to other decisions and it's impossible for us to come back and arrive back at that original decision.
Stanza : 4 11 I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Explanation: The poet will always tell with a sigh about his decision. He will sigh either with relief that he made the right choice or with regret that he made the wrong choice. So the choice of poet is important for his future but we don’t know if he’s going to be happy or not.
Stanza : 4 12 Two roads diverged in a wood, and I I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Explanation: In this line, the poet sums up his story and tells us that he took the road less traveled by. With the hesitation in the line before, this declaration could be regretful. Lastly, the poet is telling that choice is important. It was the choice which determined his density and made him poet different from others. His future was determined by his choice. This is how choice made all the difference.
Theme of the poem 13 This poem is about the journey of life. The two roads diverged in a yellow wood forest symbolizing a person’s life. Here poet is making the connection between life and travelling. The poet’s choice about which road to take represents the different decisions we sometimes must make and how those decisions will affect the future. The expression, ‘ down the road ’, that we use to describe something that might happen months or even years from now. Poet captures the uncertainty about making decisions.
