THE ROAD NOT TAKEN
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Robert Lee Frost (1916)

The poem “The Road Not Taken”, by Robert Frost speech about someone before
of two situations in the life, however, just one is chosen and this choice it will determine
entire life of him/her. We live this indecision in our own life. Every day we faced with
situations that force us the take a decision and is necessary analyze what is the best
choice, because it’s that makes all difference in our life. This is that Robert Frost shows
us in his poem – the choice that we make in our life determines our future-, to him the
road that chose was the better.
External Analysis:
I. The poem consists of four stanzas; each stanza has five lines, for this can
be called Quintilha. The poem contains rhymes alternate between
ABAAB, CDCCD, EFEEF, and GHGGH. The entire poem has twenty
lines; each line has nine syllables poetic forming tetrameter iambic.
II.The poem contain quality rich in the rhymes, cause the poet used word of
different grammatical classes, for example, the word “wood” that is
noun and “Stood” that is condition adverb and “could” that is condition
verb.
III.The poem contains One hundred forty-four words. The first and third line
has thirty seven words and the second and fourth has thirty five words.
Internal Analysis:
I. The poem contain musicality, as we can perceive in the first stanza the
phoneme “u” in the words “wood” “stood” and “could”, characterizing
the alliteration and causing the musicality. There are also the metaphors
manly in the beginning, when the Lyric I said: “Two roads diverged…”
meaning the two decisions, two ways that the traveler will have choose;
there is yet the personification, for example, in the second stanza and in
the third line the Lyric I says: “Because it was grassy and wanted

wear…”, this is an example of personification, because we know that a
road may not have desire to dress.
II.The Lyric I is a poet, because he participated of the history. The tone
more present in the poem is the Lyric I indecision, and this tone is
consistent in the entire poem, just in the end (penultimate line) he
decided and choose the road less travel and this did all difference in him
life;
III.The tension present in the poem is the physichological character, because
it occurs between two thoughts, that is, two roads and what he should
choose and this tension is resolved with his choice in the end.
IV.The poem was written in 1916, in the beginning of the War World First
and the United Stat wouldn’t enter the war, However the pressure to
protect the commercial interests forced the United States to join the
battle, so we can understand the “two road” as the desire to stay out of
the war, but it choose fight the war, too, that is, two roads to USA and
they chosen one.
