Society is strong when its citizens are responsible. Responsible citizenship is manifested through participation in activities and by promoting the common good.
The Common Good
Volunteerism, subsidiarity , and solidarit y are essential to community life. Think of a community where members are only concerned about their own gains and profit, where the strong and rich enjoy privileges that the weak and poor don't.

This will cause society its downfall. When citizens contribute to the socio-economic life of society, it can achieve stability and sustainable development.
It is for their reason that society also protects its citizens, and looks after their development as persons, professionals, and as members of society. This is done by providing infrastructure and services for everyone, such as hospitals, schools, housing, and health.

When basic needs are secured, citizens can function well and contribute positively to society. This unit is about you and society, how you can support its goals and what you should expect from it as a citizen.
Living with the common good in mind is the foundation of a strong society. We learn to promote it when we, as individuals, consciously think of others all the time. This can be demonstrated in many ways.
Like when an illness occurs in the family, everyone cares and attends to his/her needs. Each member is also assigned household chores.
At the barangay level, we can participate in various programs such as those for medical consultation , seminar s on income generating project , fumigation of houses, creeks and canals, clinics on basic skills in sports for the youth of the community, etc. Common good is achieved through strong social systems, institutions,
medical consultation
seminars on income generating project
fumigation
basic skills in sports
Common good is achieved through strong social systems, institutions, and environments from which the community members can benefit from. Some examples of these are :
accessible and affordable public health care system,
effective public safety and security
peace and order, just legal and political system
unpolluted environment, and flourishing economic system.
Minding My Ways To promote the common good, you have to be aware of what is happening around you. Listed below are activities by which you can be aware of what is going on in and around your country. Beside it are columns where you can indicate whether you do the described activities Daily, Quite Often , Once in a While , or Never. Put a check (✔) mark under the column that corresponds your answer.
Activities Daily Quite often Once in a while Never Reading News Paper Watching News on Tv Listening to the news over the radio Discussing national issues with others Visiting different parts of the country
Activities Daily Quite often Once in a while Never Reading books about Philippine-related issues Communicating with different members of the community Attending seminars and public forums
Of course, not all of the activities listed in the previous page can actually be done frequently, because they do not take place or are sometimes not available. If you put the majority of marks in the Quite Often and the Once in a While columns, you are doing fine. But, if you marked nearly every activity as something you Never do, it is time to examine yourself closely. your For those items that you marked Never, complete the following statements :
1. I never ___________________________ because _______________________________ 2 . I never ____________________________ Because________________________ 3 . I never_______________________________ because______________________ 4 . I never ___________________________ Because___________________________ 5 . I never _________________________ Because______________________________
What do you notice about the reasons you have given? Do they seem to be boring, uninteresting, irrelevant activities, or have nothing to do with you? Indeed, issues such as the plight of the tenant-farmers, the dim future of street children, or the conduct of US military exercises in the Philippines, may seem very distant from your everyday life as a high school student. But, aside from being a high school student, you are a Filipino as well. These things do affect you.
Study your answers in the previous exercise. Which of the values you hold influenced your answers?
■ Love of country starts with active community service. " No man is an island ," as it says in a poem, we all belong to a community and it is not only a privilege and a right to take part in community activities. It is our obligation to serve and belong to our community. Examine the following scenarios and see how you can do these . If you were to participate in a dramatic presentation, how could you show interest in the success of your presentation?
Why would you want your presentation to succeed? If you, together with some friends, saved some money to start a small business, would you be interested in having a say in the way the business will be run?
