02
The crossing of the Red Sea - the liberation of
Israel from the slavery of Egypt - announces the
liberation done by Baptism.
OLD TESTAMENT

02
Baptism is also prefigured in the crossing of the
Jordan River by which the People of God received
the gift of the land promised to Abraham’s
descendants - the image of eternal life.

02
NEW TESTAMENT
THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
The prefigurations in the Old Testament were all
fulfilled in Jesus Christ in the New Testament.

02
He begins His public ministry after being baptized
by St. John the Baptist in the Jordan River.

02
After His resurrection, Jesus gives this mission to

baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you.”
(Mt 28:19-20)

CHRISTIAN
INITIATION
OF THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
03
The journey of baptism can be covered
rapidly or slowly, but certain essential
elements will always have to be present:
•The Proclamation of the Word
•The Acceptance of the Gospel which
entails conversion
•Profession of Faith
•Baptism
•The outpouring of the Holy Spirit
•The Admission to Eucharistic Communion

03
CHRISTIAN
INITIATION
In Latin and Eastern Rites, the Christian
Initiation for adults begins with their entry
into the catechumenate and reaches its
culmination in a single celebration of the
three sacraments of Christian Initiation:
Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
OF THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
In Roman rites, Baptism is followed by
years of catechesis before being
completed later by Confirmation and the
Eucharist - the summit of Christian
Initiation.

03
This marks with the imprint of Christ who
is going to belong to him and signifies the
grace of the redemption Christ won for us
by His cross.
MYSTAGOGY
THE SIGN OF THE CROSS

03
This enlightens the candidates and the
assembly with the revealed truth and
elicits the response of faith, which is
inseparable from Baptism.
MYSTAGOGY
PROCLAMATION OF THE WORD

03
The celebrant anoints the catechumen
with the oil of catechumens or lays his
hands on him/her, and he explicitly
renounces Satan.
MYSTAGOGY
EXORCISM
Thus prepared, he is able to confess the
faith of the Church, to which he will be
“entrusted” by Baptism.

03
This water is consecrated by a prayer of
epiclesis.
MYSTAGOGY
BAPTISMAL WATER
The Church asks God that through His Son,
the power of the Holy Spirit may be sent
upon the water, so that those who will be
baptized in it may be “born of water and
the Spirit.”

03
This signifies and brings an end to sin and
entry into the life of the Most holy Trinity
through configuration to the Paschal
Mystery of Christ.
MYSTAGOGY
BAPTISMAL FORMULA
It is accompanied by the minister’s words
“[NAME], I BAPTIZE YOU IN THE NAME
OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND
OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.”
At the invocation of each person of the
Most Holy Trinity, the priest immerses the
candidate in the water and raises him up
again.

03
Sacred Chrism - perfumed oil consecrated
by the bishop - is used to anoint the newly
baptized signifying the gifts of the Holy
Spirit, who has become a Christian, that is,
one “anointed” by the Holy Spirit,
incorporated into Christ who is anointed
priest, prophet, and king.
MYSTAGOGY
ANOINTING WITH SACRED CHRISM

03
This signifies that the person baptized has
“put on Christ” has risen with Christ.
MYSTAGOGY
WHITE GARMENT AND CANDLE
The candle, lit from the Paschal candle,
signifies that Christ has enlightened the
newly baptized.
The newly baptized is now, in the only Son,
a child of God entitled to say the prayer of
the children of God: “The Lord’s Prayer”

RECIPIENTS OF
BAPTISM
04

Every person who is not yet baptized and only
such a person is able to be baptized.

0104
BAPTISM OF
ADULTS
Since the beginning of the Church, adult
baptism is the common practice where the
proclamation of the Gospel is still new, the
catechumenate therefore occupies an
important place.

BAPTISM OF
INFANTS
Tainted by original sin, children also have the
need for new birth in Baptism to be freed
from the power of darkness and brought into
the realm of the freedom of the children of
God.

05
THE MINISTERS
OF THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

05
The ordinary ministers of Baptism are the
bishop and priest. In the Latin Church, deacons
can also minister the sacrament.
In case of necessity, any person, even
someone not baptized, can baptize, if he has
the right intention.

06
NECESSITY
OF THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

06
Jesus Himself affirms the necessity that Baptism is
necessary for salvation and commands His
disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and
to baptize them.

06
The Church held a firm conviction that those who
suffer death for the sake of the faith without
having received Baptism are baptized by their
death for and with Christ. This BAPTISM OF
BLOOD, much like the desire for Baptism, brings
about the fruits of Baptism without being a
sacrament.

06
For catechumens who die before their baptism,
their explicit desire to receive it, together with
repentance for their sins, and charity, assures them
the salvation that they were not able to receive
through the sacrament.

06
As for infants who have died without receiving
Baptism, the Church can only entrust them to the
mercy of God, as she does in her funeral rites for
them.
“Let the children come to me, do not hinder them”

OF THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISMTHE GRACE
The Sacrament of Baptism

03
Immersion in water not only symbolizes
death and purification, but also
regeneration and renewal.
TWO
PRINCIPAL
EFFECTS
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
The two principal effects of Baptism are:
•Purification from sins;
•New birth in the Holy Spirit

03
By baptism, all sins are forgiven, as well as
the punishment for sins.
FORGIVENESS
OF SINS
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
But temporal consequences of sin remain
in the baptized such as suffering, illness,
death, and such frailties inherent in life as
weakness of character, concupiscence.

03
Baptism also makes us a “new creature,”
an adopted son of God, who has become
partaker of the divine nature,” members of
Christ and coheir with Him, and a temple
of the Holy Spirit.
NEW
CREATURE
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

The SANCTIFYING GRACE JUSTIFICATION
•Enabling them to believe in God, to
hope in Him, and to love Him through
theological virtues.
•Giving them the power to live and act
under the Holy Spirit's prompting
through the Holy Spirit's gifts.
•Allowing them to grow in goodness
through moral virtues.
03
NEW
CREATURE
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

03
Baptism makes us members of the Church.
From the baptismal fonts is born the one
People pf God of the New Covenant, which
transcends all the natural human limits of
nations, cultures, races, and sexes.
INCORPORATION
INTO THE
CHURCH
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
By this sacrament, they share in the
priesthood of Christ, in His prophetic and
royal mission.

Reborn as sons of God, the baptized must
profess before men the faith they have
received through the Church and
participate in the apostolic and missionary
activity of the People of God.
03
INCORPORATION
INTO THE
CHURCH
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

03
Baptism constitutes the foundation of
communion among all Christians,
including those who are not yet in full
communion with the Catholic Church.
UNITY OF
CHRISTIAN
SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

03
Baptism seals the Christian with the
indelible spiritual mark of his belonging to
Christ making all baptized incorporated
and configured to Christ.
INDELIBLE
SPIRITUAL
