‘‘ Servant Girl’’ is a short story written by Estrella D. Alfon . It is a story that captures the struggle of a poor girl who works as a maid and the hardships she must endure to survive. The story is set in the Philippines and revolves around the life of a young girl who is employed as a servant.

The story begins with the introduction of a young girl who is working as a domestic helper for a wealthy family. The girl, who is never named in the story, is described as a shy and timid person who has little to no experience in the world. She is shown to be a hardworking girl who is always willing to do whatever it takes to please her employers.

However, despite her earnest efforts, the girl is not appreciated by her employers. Instead, she is treated harshly and is constantly reminded of her low status. The family even calls her ‘’stupid girl’’ and makes fun of her because she does not know how to pronounce certain words correctly. The girl is depicted as someone who remains silent and does not fight back against the discrimination she is subjected to.

The story perfectly captures the helplessness of the girl who is stuck in a difficult situation and has nowhere to turn. It is a story that is relatable to many people who may have faced similar situations in their lives. The writer effectively uses literary devices such as imagery, symbolism and metaphor to emphasize the themes of injustice, abuse and poverty that serve as the underlying themes of the story.
