The Seven Churches EPHESUS SMYRNA PERGAMUM THYATIRA SARDIS PHILADELPHIA LAODICEA
THE LOVELESS CHURCH EPHESUS
“Desirable” (deeply love by the Lord) An ancient city of Turkey A prosperous city, since Ephesus was a center of travel and commerce. Paul visited and preached in Ephesus. EPHESUS
In Acts 20:16-29, Paul sent a message to the Church of Ephesus to meet him at Miletus. Acts 20:27-31 “27 because I’ve taught you everything I could about God’s eternal plan and I’ve held nothing back. 28 So guard your hearts. Be true shepherds over all the flock and feed them well. Remember, it was the Holy Spirit who appointed you to guard and oversee the churches that belong to Jesus, the Anointed One, which he purchased and established by his own blood.” EPHESUS
29 “I know that after I leave, imposters who have no loyalty to the flock will come among you like savage wolves.” 30 Even some from among your very own ranks will rise up, twisting the truth to seduce people into following them instead of Jesus. 31 So be alert and discerning. Remember that for three years, night and day, I’ve never stopped warning each of you, pouring out my heart to you with tears.” EPHESUS
Revelation 2:2-3 “ I know all that you’ve done for me— you have worked hard and persevered. I know that you don’t tolerate evil. You have tested those who claimed to be apostles and proved they are not, for they were imposters. I also know how you have bravely endured trials and persecutions because of my name, yet you have not become discouraged .” EPHESUS
Rev 2:4 “But I have this against you: you have abandoned the passionate love you had for me at the beginning. ” EPHESUS
EPHESUS Though, the Lord is pleased with how this loveless church hates the Nicolaitans, since the Lord hates them as well. “Think about how far you have fallen! Repent and do the works of love you did at first. I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place of influence if you do not repent.” (Rev 2:5)
EPHESUS This is what the Lord promises to us: Rev 2:7 “The one whose heart is open let him listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying now to all the churches. To the one who overcomes, I will give access to feast on the fruit of the Tree of Life that is found in the paradise of God .”
EPHESUS This is what the Lord promises to us: Hosea 14:4 “I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him.”
THE MARTYR CHURCH SMYRNA
SMYRNA “Myrrh” (the trials and troubles we all go through) An ancient city of Turkey Its modern name is Izmir. In history, the Smyrna church was persecuted 2 times.
SMYRNA 1st persecution: They were persecuted for 3 reasons, (1) their opposition to emperor worship, (2) pagan worship, (3) there was opposition because of the Jews. 2nd persecution: The Great Fire of Smyrna, September 13-22, 1922
SMYRNA This church was persecuted a lot . They suffer physically , emotionally , and financially . But according to the Lord, they are rich .
SMYRNA “Do not yield to fear in the face of the suffering to come but be aware of this: the devil is about to have some of you thrown into prison to test your faith. For ten days you will have distress but remain faithful to the day you die, and I will give you the victor’s crown of life.” (Rev. 2:10)
SMYRNA “The one whose heart is open let him listen carefully to what the Spirit is presently saying to all the churches. The one who conquers will not be harmed by the second death.” (Rev. 2:11)
SMYRNA Revelation 21:8 “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the despicable, the murderers, the perverts, the sorcerers, the idolaters, and all deceivers, they will find their place in the lake of fire and sulfur, which is the second death.”
THE COMPROMISING CHURCH PERGAMUM
PERGAMUM “elevated place” (seasons of praise and favor) City of Turkey Its modern name is Mysia Massive idolatrous temples Today, the most famous structure from Pergamum is the monumental altar which apparently was devoted to the false Greek deities Zeus and Athena.
PERGAMUM “I know where you live—where Satan sits enthroned, yet you still cling faithfully to the power of My name…” (Rev. 2:13) “You did not deny your faith in me even in the days of my faithful martyr Antipas, who was executed in your city, where Satan lives.” (Rev. 2:13)
PERGAMUM But there are some who tolerate and hold some teachings of Balaam and Nicolaitans. “So repent, then, or I will come quickly to war against them with the sword of my mouth.” (Rev. 2:16)
PERGAMUM “But the one whose heart is open, let him listen carefully to what the Spirit is presently saying to all the churches. To everyone who is victorious I will let him feast on the hidden manna and give him a shining white stone. And written upon the white stone is inscribed his new name, known only to the one who receives it.” (Rev. 2:17)
THE CORRUPT CHURCH THYATIRA
THYATIRA “The incense of affliction” (learning to praise and overcome hardships) An ancient city of Turkey Its modern name is Akhisar . Once a wealthy town because of its trade guilds. Its early history is unknown.
THYATIRA Just like other churches, the Lord knows their hard works and endurances as well as acknowledges that they are doing more than they have never done before. But the Lord still has against them: they let Jezebel teach and mislead the Lord’s servants by committing immoral things and eat food offered to idols.
THYATIRA The Lord already gave Jezebel a chance to repent, but she refused and continued her doings. So the Lord will throw her on a bed of suffering as well as those who take part in adultery with her will suffer greatly if they do not repent and stop.
THYATIRA Some in the Thyatira church do not follow Jezebel’s teaching, the Lord’s only command to these people is to only continue the way they are until He comes. Those who will win the victory and keep on obeying the Lord will be given power over the nation; “...They will rule the nations with an iron rod and smash those nations to pieces like clay pots.” (Rev. 2:27-28 CEV) This power was the same power that God the Father has given to Jesus.
THE DEAD CHURCH SARDIS
SARDIS “Those who escape” (breaking free of our past) Capital of Lydian (an ancient kingdom in western Turkey) The first city where gold and silver coins were minted. Twice in the history of Sardis it had fallen to its enemies because it was not alert and watching.
SARDIS “...I know all that you do and I know that you have a reputation for being really “alive,” but you’re actually dead!” (Rev. 3:1 TPT) “Wake up and strengthen all that remains before it dies, for I haven’t found your works to be perfect in the sight of my God.” (Rev. 3:2 TPT)
SARDIS “So remember all the things you’ve received and heard, then turn back to God and obey them. For if you continue to slumber, I will come to you like a thief, and you’ll have no idea at what hour I will come. “ Rev. 3:3
SARDIS “A few of you in Sardis have not dirtied your clothes with sin. You will walk with me in white clothes, because you are worthy.” Rev. 3:4
SARDIS “For those who will overcome and win the victory because they obey the Lord, the Lord will make them wear white clothes and their names will not be erased from the Book of Life and the Lord will also tell God the Father and his angels that they are his followers.” Rev. 3:5
THE FAITHFUL/BRIDAL CHURCH PHILADELPHIA
PHILADELPHIA “Brotherly love” (learning lessons of loving others) An ancient city of Turkey Its modern name is Alasehir . Out of 7 churches, Philadelphia is the smallest one
PHILADELPHIA The citizens of Philadelphia were betrayed by the Roman authorities, and the Christians were rejected not only by the authorities but also by the locals. One of the rejections was by the local Jews. At these times, the Christians were still closely related to the Jewish Synagogues. But now, the door of the local Synagogue was shut for them.
PHILADELPHIA At that time, Jews were exempted from worshiping the Emperor, and Christians were relatively safe while they stick with the Jews. But now, the lives of the Christians were at risk- they were exposed to the cult of the Emperor’s orders.
PHILADELPHIA The Lord knows how faithful, persistent, and obedient this church is, so the Lord opens a door for them that no one can shut. (Rev. 3:8 TPT)
PHILADELPHIA “Watch how I deal with those of the synagogue of Satan who say that they are Jews but are not, for they’re lying. I will make them come and bow down at your feet and acknowledge how much I’ve loved you” (Rev 3:9 TPT)
PHILADELPHIA The Lord is their protector. Since they already followed the Lord’s teaching about perseverance, the Lord will protect them from the time of testing that everyone in all the world must go through. “I am coming soon. Continue the way you are now, then no one will take away your crown.” (Rev. 3:11 ICV)
PHILADELPHIA “For the one who is victorious, I will make you to be a pillar in the sanctuary of my God, permanently secure. I will write on you the name of my God and the name of the city of my God—the New Jerusalem, descending from my God out of heaven. And I’ll write my own name on you.” (Rev. 3:12 ICV)
THE LUKEWARM CHURCH LAODICEA
LAODICEA “People’s rights” (surrendering our rights to him) An ancient city of Turkey. A prosperous city. Several prosperous industries bolstered the economy of the city which included banking, clothing manufacture, and a medical school. The city did not have a useful water supply of its own to draw from like the other cities.
LAODICEA “But because you are neither cold nor hot, but lukewarm, I am about to spit you from my mouth.” (Rev. 3:16) They are prideful, since they claim how rich and successful they are and have everything they need. According to the Lord, they are pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. (Rev. 3:17)
LAODICEA “So I counsel you to purchase gold perfected by fire, so that you can be truly rich. Purchase a white garment to cover and clothe your shameful Adam-nakedness. Purchase eye salves to be placed over your eyes so that you can truly see.” (Rev. 3:17)
LAODICEA The Lord corrects and punishes He loves. “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.” (Rev. 3:20-21)
LAODICEA “And to the one who conquers I will give the privilege of sitting with me on my throne, just as I conquered and sat down with my Father on his throne. The one whose heart is open let him listen carefully to what the Spirit is saying now to the churches.” Rev 3:21-22
