THE SOCIETY Introduction

Pakistani society is structured along family, biradri , tribe and ethnicity. Kinship: social relation based on blood ties having a bond of mutual support and common identity. Civil society is dualistic in nature and divided along two principal tracks: indigenous ( Islamized)and modern. Operating social behavior is governed by consideration of ( lihaz, sharam and murawat ) Rules imposed are part of professional responsibility and inhibit the practice of good governance

There is the fundamental dilemma : an impersonal, impartial system of governance Societal norms are not permanent and dissolve with time as the forces of urbanization, education, and technology to the rest of the world take hold.

Like other societies, Pakistani society has also many over-lapping identities based on ( language, caste , ideology, location ) Tribal affiliation in parts of balochistan and KPK with a clear linguistic divide on kinship, baradri and caste in Punjab. After seperation : C hristopher Jaffrelor2 with other authors attribute many societal problems afflicting Pakistan to punjabization of pakistan

80% army, 55% civil service, this raised power in 1950. Also benefit from irrigation work not only in Punjab but also in some areas of Sindh. Muhajirs were over-presented not in the army but in bureaucracy as well as industrial ownership.

Punjab most populous province, highest no. of seats in NA power in military and bureaucracy from the other 3 provinces. Mumtaz Ali Bhutto ( ppp ) introduce a language bill that Sindhi is compulsory in province schools. Mhajir forms (MQM) it became the voice of muhajir and also won a majority of seats and became a political force. Muhajir captured urban seats while ppp remained with rural seats. After Separation of Bangladesh

“Live and let live” policies weakened sindhi nationalist parties. Balochistan largest province in the area has its characteristics, tribal, and culture. Its tribalism is different from other Pathans. Forth province NWFP later named as KP there is pashto speaking pathan and hindko speaking people in hazara .

Pakistani society has been visibly Islamized. Professor M A Qadeer explains that there are not three separate belief systems but three parallel ideologies and systems of norms. Social institutes: education has madrassas, urdu -medium and english -medium schools. Women are largely confined to char divar and wear burqa or cover heads. He aptly describes about teaching of Islam: Islam touches almost all institutions but somehow fails in moral orders that meet social and economic challenges. M A Qadeer

Leading lawyer and thinker. Sketch the conflict between moral values and traditional values. Dr Ali Qasimi He describes 1947 to early 1970’s He believes that those who ran states and govt at that time were not secular Babar Sattar

The biggest shift towards Islamization took place during the 11 years of Zia ul Haq rule (Islamic rule and policies) Change the education system. Legal judicial system. Zakat and tax according to Islamic teaching.

Zia theorized three major issues: Development of material culture(weapons, machines, buildings)and underdevelopment of non material norms(ideas ,attitudes ,ethics) Disparity between public and private norms. Imbalance between imagined or lived culture.
