Composite News

What is composite news? Composite news is a news type which is several-featured or multi-angular with two or more aspects of news topic drawn together for the sake of space and coherence.

What is composite news? In structure, the composite story may resemble that of a follow-up story in that both of them aim to consolidate component parts.

However, they differ in the sense that the follow-up story ends in a tie-in with a past story, whereas, the composite story is composed of units, each one is made up of fresh, spot news frequently with reference to the future.

It is created for a common news story, preferably using a structure that is based on a common structure of the different versions of the story.

1. Include all the features in the lead in the order of their importance. 2. Explain and elaborate in the body each of the features in the order in which they are in the lead. 3. Relegate less important details of each feature to less important positions. However, each chain of facts although covered separately should be handled as a single, unified story. Steps in Writing a Composite Story

Structure of a composite story

WRITING TIPS Write the news as soon as you have gathered the facts and list them down in a descending order of importance. Highlight the most important data as your lead and be accurate in presenting facts. List down other possible lead angles of the story. Write the full name of the person and organization when first mentioned. Thereafter, use only the surname or any appropriate title of the person and acronym for the organization. Attribute authority or source of news to strengthen the credibility of the news story and to protect the paper.

WRITING TIPS Identify names mentioned, however, if the person has several identifications, use the one relevant to the facts of the story but, present both sides of the persons involved in the story. Avoid editorializing, be objective and present facts without bias. Make short paragraphs of varying lengths and use simple words but prefer active rather than passive voice. Place direct and indirect quotes separately in paragraphs. Watch out for errors of fact and grammar and adopt a paper style sheet for consistency.

Example Seven people, among them a local traffic enforcer, were killed in separate highway accidents in the provincial capital and in nearby towns in the past two days, police blotters indicated. The first two fatalities were identified as Elmo Padernal and Lester Jordan, whose speeding motorcycles collided head-on on a secluded stretch of a highway in Banga town on Saturday.

Example Two others, Jojo Miranda and Gladys Anne Paranaque, died on the spot the next day when a bus rammed the motorcycle they were riding in Barangay Carpenter Hill in the south of Koronadal City. Koronadal City is the seat of the South Cotabato provincial government and the administrative capital of Region 12.

Motorists Carl John Leonida and Danny Camariñas were killed Sunday afternoon in one accident after another in busy thoroughfares in Koronadal City. The latest to perish in these series of accidents was Clarence Federiso , a member of the city's Traffic Management Unit. Federiso was killed when a speeding bus sideswept his motorcycle while at Gen. Santos Drive southwest of Koronadal City. His badly-injured passenger, Christine Joy Pagdato is still in critical condition in a hospital.
