The Thoracic Region Adi Nugroho Harlianto Spine Beautiful Saturday Lecture (SBSL)

The Thoracic Region Typical Thoracic Vertebrae (T2-T8) Vertebral body = Heart shaped AP diameter increases Transverse diameter remains same Unique Thoracic Vertebra (T9-T12) AP diameter remains same Transverse diameter increases Thoracic Curve (Kyphosis) Absent = Straight Back Syndrome (associated w. organic heart disease)

Components of the Thoracic Cage Anterior: Sternum, Costal Cartilages Laterally: Ribs Posteriorly: T1 to T12 Thoracic Inlet = T1, first rib, superior sternum Pathology = thoracic inlet syndrome Superior subclavian vein and arteries Brachial plexus (anterior division C8 & T1) Atypical Ribs = 1 st , 2 nd , 10 th , 11 th , 12 th

Joints of Thoracic Vertebrae

Unique Thoracic Vertebrae and pathology T1 = similar to cervical Rectangular (vs Heart shaped) Uncinate process Superior vertebral notches above pedicles Superior facet = full facet (vs demifacets ) T9 & T10 10 th ribs does not articulate w. T1 = absence of inferior demifacet of T9 T11 Single rib facet (like T9 & T10), located in pedicle Triangular p. spinosus , blunt apex Transition to lumbar shape T12 Lumbar-like, large body w. small transverse process Unique Z joints w. L1, permits only flexion Scoliosis (lateral curvature of spine) affects the symmetry between R and L costocorporeal & costovertebral articulations
