THE THREE LEVELS OF
MORAL DILEMMA
SIR DIOSDADO L. DELA ROSA

Objectives
Identify and define the three
levels of moral dilemma
Illustrate by giving examples
on each of the three moral
dilemmas.
Value the importance of
moral dilemma and seek
ways to resolve it.

Moral Dilemma
A moral dilemma is a "decision
making problem between two
possible moral imperatives, neither
of which is unambiguously
acceptable or preferable.
In a moral dilemma, one is caught
between two options. It is a
deadlock.

False Dilemma
Situations where the decision-maker
has a moral duty to do one thing, but
is tempted or under under pressure
to do something else. A false
dilemma is a choice between a right
and wrong unlike oral dilemma
where both choices are wrong.

Quick Check-up
Go to your google classroom and
check the quiz on Moral Dilemma.
Answer each questions by choosing
either TRUE or FALSE.

You have 5 minutes to finish and
answer the quiz.

THE THREE MORAL DILEMMA
Individual Dilemma
Organizational Dilemma
Structural Dilemma

Individual Dilemma
This refers to personal dilemmas. It is an
individual's damn-if-you-do and damn-if-
you-don't.
The dilemma is faced by an individual who
is commonly torn between two
obligations.

Individual Dilemma
Josef's wife was dying from a particular
type of cancer but the doctor said that
there was a newly discovered drug, by a
local chemist, that might save his wife's
life. However, the chemist was charging
ten times the money t cost to make the
drug and Josef can't afford.

Individual Dilemma
Josef could only raise half of the money
so he bargained with the chemist to pay
the rest of the money later in exchange
for the drug. Unfortunately, the chemist
insists of making profit from it so he did
not take Josef's offer.
No, I
disagree

Individual Dilemma
The husband was desperate to save his
wife, so later that night he broke into the
chemist's laboratory and stole the drug.

ORGANIZATIONAL DILEMMA
A puzzle posed by the dual necessities of a social
organization and members' self-interest. It may exist
between personal interests and organizational welfare
or between group interests and organizational well-
being (Wagner, 2019).
Organizational dilemmas may likewise occur in
business, medical, and public sector.
Organizational dilemmas arise due to different
opposing concerns between various groupings in
organization.

The mission of Catholic School A
is to serve the poor by giving
quality education. It is torn
between the obligation to charge
low tuition to help the poor and
to pay better salaries to keep
quality teachers.
ORGANIZATIONAL DILEMMA

STRUCTURAL DILEMMA
A structural dilemma is a conflict of
perspective of sectors, groups, and
institutions that may be affected by the
decision.

A principal ought to welcome and
encourage parents and community
participation in school affairs. Based on
her experience, parents and community
are passive and so the principal always
ends up deciding and doing the things
just the same.

How can
we resolve
moral
dilemma?

Resolving Dilemmas
Think of available alternative
options revealing that the
dilemma does not really exist.
The creative moral agent will try
to think of other alternatives.

Resolving Dilemmas
Another way is
"choosing the greater
good and lesser evil"
02

Resolving Dilemmas
ETHICS APPROACH:
"Do what you can where you
are." (Joseph Fletcher)
"Love and do what you will." (St.
Augustine of Hippo)
