The Urban Game

Due to profits being made, draw on your map 1 nice house anywhere you want it to be 1 canal (from the river away from the village; while your river is wavy the canal should be straight – it’s man made!) Round 1 - 1745

Because of a population increase, draw on your map 5 more houses Round 2 - 1750

Because of the Enclosure Acts Add 1 more nice house Draw a fence that separates half of your “common” land (open space that was owned in common by the village) Round 3 - 1760

Because of the change from the cottage industry to the factory system, add to your map 1 factory (must be placed along the river somewhere – for power) No smoke coming off factory! This is an old hydro-powered water wheel factory Round 4 – 1773

There is migration because of the need for work. Add to your map 5 houses 1 church 1 pub 1 store At least two additional roads 1 more bridge Round 5 - 1774

Because of the enormous profits from the factory Add 5 more factories (still need to be near the river) Round 6

More people are coming to the village looking for work Add 5 tenement houses (buildings that can house multiple families) Round 7 - 1780

With more people you need to add 1 store 1 pub 1 church 1 school Round 8 - 1781

Workers need to deal with the stress in their lives so add 5 more pubs Round 9 - 1782

Not everyone is poor. The factory owners and landowning farmers make money so Add 2 special (nice homes) Round 10 - 1783

New inventions allow for factories to be built anywhere 10 factories (with smoke) Add smoke to all pre-existing factories 1 nice house Round 11 - 1785

It is the new age of “heavy industry” Add 1 coal mine 1 iron bridge to replace the old wooden one Round 12 - 1800

Industry becomes dangerous and casualty rates go up. Add 1 cemetary Round 13 - 1815

It is necessary for transportation to improve. Add 1 major railroad line (connect factories to your coal mines)) Round 14 - 1820

More industry means more workers which means more crime 1 jail 2 pubs Round 15 - 1827

New inventions are being made. One thing this leads to is gas being used to light streets. Add 20 street lamps Round 16 - 1835

Working and living conditions continue to deteriorate. Add 2 hospitals 1 cemetary Round 17 - 1838

More transportation is needed. Add 1 railroad line Round 18 - 1840

Some urban dwellers are doing well (the emerging middle class). For them, add: 2 theaters 2 private schools Round 19 - 1842

The results of industrialization and urbanization are very detrimental to people’s lives. Add 1 cemetery 1 jail 1 hospital Round 20 - 1845
