Weapons of World War 1

Causes of the World
War 1
•One of the causes of
the war was the
assassination of
Archduke Ferdinand.
He was killed on June
28,1914 by a member
of the Black Hand.
The Black Hand was a
criminal organization
that went against
Archduke Ferdinand’s
rule.

Alliances in World War 1
The alliances in World War 1
were the British, the French ,
Russia, and Serbia. They were
called the Allies during the
war. Germany and Austria
Hungary were called the
Central Powers.

Map of World War 1

Trench warfare.
•Trench warfare was
used for this war to
protect troops from
the sometimes
constant fire of the
enemies. Sometimes
people would stay in
the trenches for
months where they
could not shower and
where the same
clothing every day.

Submarines

Enter the war, we must
•The United States joined the
War on the Allies side, after
Germany destroyed many of
their ships, like the passenger
ship the Lusitania.

Submarines
•The Germans used submarines
in this war to attack Allie ships
and were also used to spy on
enemy troops. The Lusitania, a
huge passenger ship was sunk
May 7, 1915 by the Germans.
German submarines were called
U-boats.

Machine guns
•Machine Guns were introduced
during World War 1. These
weapons were useful in killing
enemy infantry at a very quick
rate. They were introduce in
1895.

Poison gas
•German forces were
first to use poison gas
in World War 1. The
most dangerous gas
that they made was
called mustard gas.
This type of gas was
fired in shells by
soldiers.

Tanks

Tanks
•Tanks were first used in this War by
Britain in September 15
th
1916. They
were first used in the Battle of
Somme. Before World War 1 they
used army trucks which didn’t have
the same off road capabilities as a
tank. Tanks are metal vehicles that
we still use in modern warfare. They
were mostly unstoppable in the war.

The Black Hand

The Black hand
•The Black hand was an organization
made to try to unite all South Slav
territories.
•One of the members of the Black
Hand assassinated Archduke
Ferdinand.
•Once this occurred the Black Hand
was gathered up and brought to
prison or either sentenced to death.

The Battle of Somme
The Battle of Somme started on
July 1, 1916. The battle was
very bloody because there were
people on both sides that were
killed. The British lost the most
though because the British
generals told the soldiers to
walk to the German trenches
when the generals thought the
Germans were defeated. When
the British soldiers did they
were quickly shot down by the
Germans.

Airplanes

Airplanes
•Airplanes were used first in
World War 1 for warfare. They
were already used before this,
but not for battle. In this War
they were used to drop bombs,
spy on enemies, and eventually
enemy air fighters and these
planes got into air battles called
dogfights.

Zeppelin
•These had a very short time of
battle in World War 1.They were
used to bomb people and shoot
people. They weren’t were used
in the war very long because
one they were to easy to shoot
down, and two they were filled
with flammable gas.

Communication
•They had a good amount of
communication during this war.
They had phones and had
airplanes to send messages
throughout battle front.

Shell Shock
•Shell Shock was a
illness that soldiers
in the war had. The
symptoms were
giddiness, lack of
concentration, and
headaches. If
soldiers got this
they were called a
traitors and then
executed. Really
the illnesses were
caused by German
Shell cannons.

The Treaty of Versailles
•This treaty ended the World War
1. It was signed in 1919 it
stated that the blame of the War
would be on Germany. Germany
would lose land, amongst a lot
of other things.
