Matthew 25:1-13
The Wise & The Foolish

Jesus’ Final Week
No more lengthy teachings
after Tuesday (Matt. 25)

About the End-Times

Matthew 25:1-13
1“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be
like ten virgins who took their lamps and went
out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them
were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish
ones took their lamps but did not take any oil
with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil
in jars along with their lamps. 5 The
bridegroom was a long time in coming, and
they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

Matthew 25:1-13
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the
bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then
all the virgins woke up and trimmed their
lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise,
‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going
out.’ 9 “ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be
enough for both us and you. Instead, go to
those who sell oil & buy some for yourselves.’

Matthew 25:1-13
10 “But while they were on their way to buy
the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins
who were ready went in with him to the
wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11
“Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they
said, ‘open the door for us!’12 “But he replied,
‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not
know the day or the hour.

Three Stages
in Jewish Wedding
1)Engagement: An agreement made between
the fathers of the future Bride and Groom
2)Betrothal: A ceremony where mutual
promises are exchanged between the
fiancé and fiancée (Binding, and dissolved
only by official divorce)
3)Marriage: Approximately one year later
when the bridegroom would appear at an
unexpected time for the bride

Jewish Wedding:
Parallels to Christian Life
Paul: I betrothed you to one husband, to
present you as a pure virgin to Christ.
(2 Corinthians 11:2)

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
(Revelation 19:6-9)
6 Then I (Apostle John) heard…“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. 7
Let us rejoice and exult and give Him the glory,
for the Marriage of the Lamb has come, and
His Bride has made herself ready…

The Marriage Supper of the Lamb
(Revelation 19:6-9)
8 it was granted the Bride to clothe herself
with fine linen, bright and pure”—for the fine
linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. 9
The angel said, “Blessed are those who are
invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.”

Marriage Supper of the Lamb
Are we the Bride
orarewetheinvited guests? Both.
Bible doesn’t make sharp distinction.
(cf. Matt. 22:1, 25:1; Rev 3:20)
Just different ways of expressing
deeper spiritual realities which is
incomparable with any earthly thing.

Meaning of Symbolisms
1) Bridegroom:
OT (God is Israel’sBridegroom/Husband)
NT (Jesus is Church’sBridegroom/Husband)
(Isa 54:4-6; 62:4-5; Je2:2; Eze16; Hos1-3;
John 3:27-30; Matt 9:15; Mark 2:19-20; Eph
5:25-32; Rev 19:6-9).
2) Oil: A ceremony where mutual promises are
exchanged between the fiancé and fiancée
(Binding, and dissolved only by official
divorce)

Meaning of Symbolisms
2) Oil: Spirit of God/Presence of God’s Spirit
(Isaiah 61:1; Zechariah 4:1-7).
Kings: Samuel anointed Saul & David with oil,
they received the Spirit (1 Sam 10:1, 6-9; 16:13).
Priests: Consecrated with anointing oil
(Leviticus 8:2, 30; compare regarding the
anointing oil, Exodus 30:22-33)

Meaning of Symbolisms
3) Light: Good works that are produced under
the influence of the Holy Spirit.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they
may see your good works.” (Matt 5:16)

Meaning of Symbolisms
4) Virgins: Sexually pure and undefiled
spiritually.
Paul says: “I am jealous for you with a
righteous jealousy. I promised you to one
husband, to Messiah, so that I might present
you as a pure virgin to him” (2 Cor. 11:2).
Revelation 14:4, John said, “These are they
who have not been defiled with women; for
they are pure, these following the Lamb
wherever He shall go. These have been
redeemed out from men as firstfruitsto God
and to the Lamb.”

I do not know you

Matthew 7:21-23
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one
who does the will of my Father who is in
heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me,
‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name,
and cast out demons in your name, and do
many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And
then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you;
depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

I do not know you
“No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.
No one who continues to sin has either seen
him or known him.” (1 John 3:6)

Result is the same.

Where are you in God’s circle?
Where is He in your circle?

Constant Communion
With God

Meaning of Symbolisms
God says that we are His Temple and that He
dwells within us. (1 Co 6:19)
But, we can…
1)Grieve the Holy Spirit (Eph4:30),
2)Quench/extinguish/stifle the Holy Spirit (1
Thess5:19),
3)Vex the Holy Spirit (Isiah 63:10)
4)Resists the Holy Spirit (Acts 7:51)
…and the anointing of His Spirit
can depart from us
(Ps 41:11; Judges 16:20; 1 Sam 16:14).

Those who are led by the
flesh, are not filled with the
Spirit.
They’ve sexual immorality,
impurity, debauchery;
idolatry, witchcraft; hatred,
discord, jealousy, fits of
rage, selfish ambition,
dissensions, factions,
envy; drunkenness,
orgies…. I warn you
beforehand, just as I did
previously, that those who
practice such things will
not inherit the kingdom of
God. (Gal 5:19ff)

Those filled with HS…

SAT Analogies
Abiding in the Spirit
produces fruit (good character)
Keeping your lamp filled with oil (God’s Spirit)
so your lamp has light
(manifested good works).

Hide it under a bushel?
No! I'm gonna let it shine
