To Kill a
Mockingbird
Theme Analysis

1.
Theme

Thematic Statement

--------------------------------------
The impossibility of understanding
the struggles of another in the
absence of truly empathizing with
their life.

2.
Scene that Depicts
the Theme

Scene that helps explain this theme:
The scene on the Boo Radley scene is a scene
that makes us feel something, it illustrates
how this idea of empathy has carried through
in the book. In this moment, Scout
understands Boo’s history, revisiting the
events of the novel through the perspective of
another. We see her improvement and growth
in this scene, and how she has really taken to
heart atticus’s words to her a year prior

3.
Application to Our
World Today

Real Life Application
✘We judge others before we know what
they’re going through
✘Age, gender, race, overall appearance get
judged
✘We need to understand their backstory
before forming an opinion

Continuation of Real World Application
✘This can be applied today to society’s social inequality today.
Society associates and groups people into the social
spectrum. These people are so much more than what they
are perceived to be, and widely misunderstood without being
given another chance.
✘More specifically, TKAM’s theme applies to social injustice
today (age, race, discrimination, social or economical class).
One person has to work harder than another to prove
themselves. One is looked down because of false stereotypes
made about them.
✘ We are still grouping and being grouped ourselves by age,
race, ethnicity, nationality, social and economic class,
occupations, clothing
