Zen has a long history and many interpretations. Essentially, Zen is the union of mind and body, a “meditation state”. It helps the body relax, release tension and enter a state of recovery. The Zen style emphasizes the connection between humans and nature, although there are no hard and fast rules.
“Zen” is one of the schools of Buddhism. It is believed that Zen was transmitted from India to China by Bodhidharma in the 5th or 6th century. It was then introduced to Japan around the 11th~13th century. So, it can be said that Zen is a distillation of three cultures: India, China and Japan.
The focus of Zen is to bring balance and tranquility to the home. The idea behind this style is to make your home a peaceful place in this busy life.
Large windows (Shoji) – A type of partition made of wood and paper. Open space, little furniture, but lots of natural light. Use lots of green plants, rocks, and Bonsai. This is a way to bring a miniature natural world into the house. Use Tatami mats for flooring. Use DIY (do it yourself) techniques. Use lots of natural materials. Prioritize handmade items, such as wood, ceramics, rattan, and raw fabric. Tea ceremony area or dry garden to lead the Zen feeling into people's mind. Use furniture with a low center of gravity. Keep furniture to a minimum to keep the home clean and tidy.
