Roxana Marriage
Roxana decided to reach out to her husband s sisters. However, they were no help to her whatsoever.
Roxana says that they sent [her] short and surely Answers; nor did any of them offer to come to see
[her], or to see the children, or so much as to enquire after them... (54). The children s own family did
not want anything to do with them, and Roxana is the reason because she made the decision to stay
with her foolish and poor husband. Eventually, Roxana had reached her breaking point to where she

For instance, in the beginning of the novel, Roxana begins to tell her story about how she met her first
husband. She states that her father married [her] to an Eminent Brewer in the City and to pardon [her]
if [she] conceal his Name, for tho he was the Foundation of [her] Ruin, [she] cannot take so severe a
Revenge upon him (47). Here, she starts off saying that he was not a good husband to her. She said
that he was the one who made her life miserable. Before she goes into details about how their situation
was like, she gives a brief description of her husband. She states how handsome and tall he was, how
he was a good dancer, and how he enjoyed sports; however, she was not happy with him. Roxana
states, ...I chose him for being a handsome, jolly Fellow, as I have said; for he was otherwise a weak,
emptyheaded, untaught Creature, as any Woman could ever desire to be coupled with (48). Even
though her father married her to him, she says that she chose him because of his looks instead of his
personality. She could have not married him and lived a happy life; instead, she married a fool instead
of a husband, and she causes this, because she did not stop her father from marrying her to him. This
event that happened before her husband leaves her, signifies that her choosing this man leads to her
unhappiness in marriage. She was focusing on the external force (his looks), which led to her internal
thoughts and feelings that he would be a good husband to show off. However, he was not a good
husband, and he eventually left her. She did realize that he was not a good husband, but she did not
know that he would be the one to leave her. Therefore, she is the cause of this, because she chose him
for his looks and wealth, which
