Function: A particulate air filter is a device composed of fibrous materials. Removes solid particulates such as dust from the air. Paper filter are generally used for cars because they are inexpensive and disposable. With paper filters, good air flow is sacrificed for better filtration. Air filters are used in applications where air quality is important, notably in engines and in cabin ventilation systems . Air is filtered by air filter and volume is measured by maf sensor. Material: Automotive filters are usually made of different materials such as paper, foam and cotton .
MASS AIR FLOW SENSOR
THROTTLE VALVE Location The throttle valve actuator is located at the rear on the variable intake manifold. Task The throttle valve actuator regulates the functions: -Idle speed -Driving mode (according to accelerator pedal position and engine load) -Cruise control mode (if cruise control installed)
Function The actuator motor (M16/6m1) in the throttle valve actuator (M16/6) adjusts the opening angle of the throttle valve (1) continuously from approx. 0 to 90° according to presets from the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The typical power consumption of the pulse width modulation signal is approx. 1 A, however it is possible up to approx. 9 A. For output stage protection the power is limited to 6 a after approx. A. Ignition "off“ In a de-energized state, the throttle valve position is determined by the spring capsule (3) (8 up to 10° opening angle). B. Ignition "on" When the ignition is switched on, the actuator motor in the throttle valve actuator is operated by the ME-SFI [ME] control unit. The throttle valve adopts a position which depends on the coolant temperature.
C. Idle speed Depending upon the coolant temperature and engine load, the actuator motor changes the rpm in the idle speed range by opening the throttle valve further (increased mixture) or closing it further (less mixture). . D. Driving mode In the driving mode (full / partial load), the actuator motor changes the throttle valve position depending on the different load states and or according to the input signals from the accelerator pedal sensor dependent on the performance maps.

THROTTLE POSITION SENSOR Definition :-Throttle position sensor is a sensor used to monitor the throttle position of the vehicle. Location :- It is located on the butterfly spindle that can directly monitor the throttle position. Principle :- It is based on the principle of potentiometer. Construction of Potentiometer:-A potentiometer is an instrument for measuring voltage by comparison of an unknown voltage with a known reference voltage A potentiometer is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding or rotating contact that forms an adjustable voltage divider. Two terminals are connected to a resistive element, the third terminal is connected to an adjustable wiper. The position of the wiper determines the output voltage.
VARIABLE INTAKE MANIFOLD Location : The variable intake manifold is located in the middle between the cylinder Task: The variable intake manifold optimizes the engine torque curve using two different intake manifold lengths. Furthermore, the air stream is improved through tumble flaps which can be swung in and out of the intake ports heads.
The limit positions of the swirl flap shafts are monitored using position sensors (Hall sensors). The sensors detect the positions of the two cylinder magnets on each shaft. For diagnosis purposes the swirl flap switchover is actuated briefly each time the engine is started to check that the flaps can be actuated and that the limit positions are reached. Trainer info: Condition Signal voltage Not operated (recess) 4.8 – 5.3 V Operated (swung out) 0.0 – 0.5 V SWIRL (TUMBLE) FLAP POSITION SENSOR
TUMBLE FLAP In the variable intake manifold the tumble flaps in each intake port can be swiveled inward when under partial load. I n this way the cross section of intake port is reduced about 50%. The flow rate of the intake air increases and ensures better distribution of the fuel air mixture in the combustion chamber. The tumble flaps are located on two tumble flap spindles, which are actuated through a linkage by the tumble flap switchover vacuum unit. When not actuated , the tumble flaps are swiveled out by a spring in the tumble flap switchover vacuum unit. The swivel range of tumble flaps between completely swiveled in or out is approx. 56 .
Tumble flap are actuated by a vacuum unit when the tumble flap switch over value is actuated ,the vacuum charged with vacuum from the vacuum reservoir this causes the tumble flaps to swiveled into the intake ports. In the de energized state, the vacuum unit is ventilated by the tumble flap switchover valve, and tumble flaps are swiveled outward by spring force.
ACTUATION CONDITIONS For the tumble flap switchover , the MESFI control unit actuates the tumble flap switch over valve according to engine load , coolant temperature and engine speed. The tumble flaps are swiveled inward in the following condition Engine load < 30% Engine speed <3000rpm Coolant temperature > 60°C ME-SFI control units controls the tumble flaps switchover according to information from the following sensor Hot film MAF sensor Coolant temperature sensor Crankshaft hall senor Left intake manifold tumble flap position sensor Right intake manifold tumble flap position sensor
SHORT PATH Variable length intake manifold switchover flap opened The variable length intake manifold switchover flaps are opened in the following conditions: Engine load < 50 % Engine speed <2000rpm or >3500 rpm Air intake takes place over the short intake tracts. In this way an increase in engine torque and output is achieved.
LONG PATH The variable length intake manifold switchover flaps are closed in the following conditions: Engine load >80% Engine speed approx.2000rpm to 3500 rpm Air intake takes place over the long intake tracts. In this way an increase in engine torque and output is achieved.
SWITCH OVER VALVE Location - The switchover valve is mounted on the front of the intake manifold Task - It allows aneroid capsules 22/6, to create vacuum or allow air to enter the passage. Desig n- Switchover valve is made up of plastic housing. It consist coil having resistance of 30 Ω . Ventilation is provided by the cap.
FUNCTION OF SWITCHOVER VALVE Energize State( B )- Port 1 closed by valve plate, so port2 connect to the port3 which creates vacuum in capsules. Due to this connecting shaft moves upwards and long intake operates. De-energize state( A )- Port 1 is open, so vacuum in capsule filled up with air so that shaft moves downwards and short path operated.
