Thyroid Cancer -Dr Sunny Singhal

INTRODUCTION Thyroid cancer is a malignancy that arises from the thyroid gland, located in the neck. This small, butterfly-shaped gland plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism through hormone production. Thyroid cancer is categorized into several types, including papillary, follicular, medullary , and anaplastic , each varying in prevalence, aggressiveness, and treatment approaches. Risk factors include genetic predispositions, radiation exposure, and certain genetic syndromes. Symptoms may include a lump in the neck, difficulty swallowing, and voice changes.

TYPES Papillary Thyroid Cancer: Most common type Slow-growing, usually highly treatable Follicular Thyroid Cancer: Includes Hurthle cell carcinoma More likely to spread to distant organs Medullary Thyroid Cancer: Arises from C cells Can be part of genetic syndromes (e.g., MEN 2) Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer: Rare and aggressive Poor prognosis

SYMPTOMS Neck Lump or Swelling: The most noticeable symptom is a lump or swelling in the neck, which may grow over time. Difficulty Swallowing: As the tumor enlarges, it can press on the esophagus, making swallowing difficult. Voice Changes: Hoarseness or changes in voice may occur if the cancer affects the vocal cords. Persistent Cough: A cough that is not related to a cold or other respiratory infection can be a sign. Neck Pain: Pain in the neck or throat that doesn’t go away can be an indicator.
