The David Tiedeman theory is also known as Tiedeman and O'Hara theory. This theory focuses on decision making processes and the personal development aspects of career development. Tiedeman believes that, developing the ego (real self) is essential to career development. Anytime an individual is unable to a dissolve crisis during the Erikson psychosocial stages it can affect the individual’s career progression TIEDEMAN’S APPROACH TO CAREER DEVELOPMENT
STAGES IN TIEDEMAN’S APPROACH Two phases: Anticipation phase Implementation phase
Anticipation phase EXPLORATION : This is the first stage under the anticipation phase. Here, the individual begins to search for possible careers. CRYSTALLIZATION: At this stage the individual begins to realize the possibility of choice. Vague ideas are now confirmed. To crystalize means “to solidify”. The individual narrows down the careers he or she has explored at the exploration stage based on what seems appealing. CHOICE: This is where the individual makes a commitment on a specific career field. E.g: an individual choosing to study business at the SHS. CLARIFICATION: This where the individual confirms the choice he or she made, considering factors like: finance, strength and weakness. Based on the individual’s strength he or she may, for example, decide to become a nurse.
Implementation phase INDUCTION: At this stage the individual puts the decisions made at the clarification stage into practice. The individual chooses to do his or her internship at a hospital, for example. REFORMATION: Reevaluating the choice based on real life experiences (internship) and making necessary adjustments. Changing some ideas you had about the career. INTEGRATION : Fully adapting to and becoming committed to the career path.
CON’T LIFE SPAN PERSPECTIVE : From this theory is understood that career development is seen as a continuous process that spans an individual’s entire life. CONTINUITY : In Tiedeman's theory, continuity refers to the intent to which an individual career progression follows a logical and consistent pattern by building on his/her past experience, skills and education . DISCONTINUITY: This refers to significant changes or breaks in an individual’s career progression. It may involve a shift in industry, job function or other significant changes that deviate from previous career path(s).
COUNSELLING AND EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS This theory will help the individual navigate the decision making process. It helps students make informed career choices. Assists clients in integrating career decisions with their overall life goals and values.
