2. 1769 - The first Car was built. This car used a steam engine fixed to a 3-wheeled cart, and used the back and forth action of a steam piston into rotary motion which propelled the wheels. This car was designed by Nicolas Cugnot , a French Engineer. 1769 1885 1890 1913 WWII 1964 1973 1997 Future

3. 1885 – Benz Patent M otorwagen Regarded as the first practical a utomobile , the Benz Patent Motorwagen was designed by Karl Benz in 1885. The car had 3 Wheels and was powered by a 1 -cylinder engine that produced 0.9 horsepower. 1769 1885 1890 1913 WWII 1964 1973 1997 Future

4. 1890 – Maybach Wilhelm Maybach built the first 4-cylinder engine which paved the w ay for higher performance cars. A decade later Maybach created a race car that set the world speed r ecord at 40mph, named Mercedes. Motor Racing begins. 1769 1885 1890 1913 WWII 1964 1973 1997 Future

5. 1913 – Ford Motor Company After fitting moving assembly lines to the factory in 1913 Ford became the world’s largest car manufacturer. It allowed for quick mass production of the Model T, which took 12.5 hours before, now only required 93 minutes . 7. 1964 – Muscle Car Era In America, performance became the focus of marketing which led to the creation of the “muscle cars”. 8. 1973 – Arab Oil Embargo The oil crisis of 1973 caused prices of o il to sky rocketed causing a world shortage. This event even though o nly lasted for 1 year, made people second think about their huge gas guzzling cars, fuel economy, and helped open the market to smaller, more efficient Japanese made vehicles. 1769 1885 1890 1913 WWII 1964 1973 1997 Future

9. 1997 – Hybrid Electric Vehicles Dating back to the 19 th century, using electricity to help power cars was one of the oldest automobile propulsion methods used. It was not popular until the release of the Toyota Prius in 1997 with more than 2 million sold as of 2009.
