What is Drafting? Drafting is the primary method of communication between designers and clients, architects, builders, engineers and production personnel, advertisers and customers. A drawing , when used to show a product's material, dimensions, and shapes , is known as a technical drawing (French 1974).
LEARNING TARGETS I can identify the tools and equipment for drafting I can list the tools and equipment for drafting
DRAWING TABLE This is a special table with an adjustable top so that it can be tilted to a desired angle .
DRAWING BOARD This is where the drawing paper is attached. It is generally made of soft, pine wood with cleats of hardwood. This board is placed on the drafting table. .
DRAWING PENCILS . These are made of graphite mixed with clay in varying amounts to make eighteen grades from 9 th (the hardest) down to 6B (the softest).
T-SQUARE . This is used as a guide for drawing horizontal lines and serves as a support triangles when drawing other kinds of lines.
. These are used for drawing vertical and oblique lines. There are two triangles used in drafting, namely 45x45 degrees and 30x60 degrees Triangles are both usually made of celluloid. TRIANGLES
The tools is used to layout arcs and circles. COMPASS
The tool is used in transferring measurements. DIVIDERS
. This type does not groove easily when pressure is applied to the pencil. Oslo paper is commonly used but bond paper is also recommended. DRAWING PAPER
. This is used for fastening paper to the drawing board or table. DRAFTING TAPES
. It is used for measuring and laying out arcs of circles as well as angles that cannot b measured with either 45-degree angle or 30x60 triangles. PROTRACTOR
. It is used to reproduce the dimensions of an object full size on a drawing or to reduce or enlarge them to some regular proportion. TRIANGULAR SCALE
. This is the device for the mechanical drawing of curved lines and should not be applied directly to the points, or used for the purpose of producing an initial curve. FRENCH CURVE
. This is to remove smears, pencil, or link lines on a drawing. ERASER ERASER SHIELD . This is to protect the drawing near the portion being erased.
. These are generally used for lettering, although the so-called the technical pen is not only used for lettering but also for drawing lines. DRAWING PENS
HOW TO LAYOUT A DRAWING SHEET Fasten the paper to the drawing board Draw border lines around the paper. Draw a title strip.
